Everyday people’s grades fall, are cyberbullied, or are exposed to inappropriate content, or even put themselves in danger because of Facebook. 38 percent of victims from frequent cyberbullying thought or committed suicide in 2013.().Because of distraction, Facebook caused many kid’s grades to lower because they spend less time studying and more time scrolling on their computers and clicking “like” on a friend’s pictures. Studies have shown that Facebook users spend 11 hours studying and working on academic work while non-users spend 15 hours. Many children are exposed to inappropriate content, like, advice on eating disorders, Facebook can be a good cite, but for only people who can use it properly. One reason kids should not have Facebook accounts at an earlier age than 15 is due to distraction.
Many kids get home and turn their computers on, and log onto their Facebook accounts to look at a friend’s pictures and read comments. Going on Facebook is not a productive, it can become addictive and then it can be hard to give-up that addiction. With Facebook being distracting to college students, it can become even more distracting to younger students. Marcus Messner, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, agrees Facebook to be distracting, “when I taught my lecture with 200 students in the classroom, I found Facebook to be distracting.” (Sept. 10, 2012.) Facebook users spent less time and therefore, had had lower GPA’s; Facebook users had an average of 20% lower GPA than non-users. Chloe Yuan, student at Virginia Commonwealth University had to shut her account due to distraction, “I realized how distracting it was from academics , so I forced myself to kind of ...

In conclusion, Facebook is a cite that is a harm to millions of people in America and around the world, because it is a tool for cyberbullying, causes distractions and exposes children to inappropriate content. Cyberbullying is a major problem in the world and will increase if we do not go on cites being mature and not intending to hurt anybodies feelings. Facebook is a major distraction because there are friends who are connected and want to chat. Finally, exposure is probably as important as cyberbullying because viewing advice about committing suicide or have an eating disorder is not healthy. Technology is becoming more common, and if we do not use these tools properly there will be huge consequences in the long run.
As technology progress, humans evolve to the advanced technology and enhance our lives via technology. We connect to our families, friends and others through social media such as Facebook. Social media takes up a huge part in our lives. Social media infest us with information that are relevant and irrelevant to us. Marry Marrow wrote, “It was Facebook that changed the face of e-communication; in fact, it was the first electronic social media” (para 1). She assumes that Facebook is playing a huge role in electronic communication. In the journalist Maria Konnikova, “How Facebook makes us unhappy?”, Konnikova divulges many aspects of people on social media through researching and experience, and finds how social makes us unhappy. I agree with Konnikova findings after reading her article. In addition, she concludes that if you are engaged, active, and creative you will not sorrowful on Social media, however if you are passively browsing and defuse to engage, you
What if using a social media platform such as facebook could be harmful to the user? People view social media outlets to be useful and entertaining, but the truth in the matter is that social media outlets are harmful. When people get involved with social media, be it facebook, twitter, instagram or snapchat, they are signing up for a commitment that provides more bad things than good. Once users have latched onto the social media of their choosing, they begin to suffer from multiple things that are directly a result of using the outlet. Although there are many negative things about using a social media platform, the main concerns boil down to social media acting as a distraction and being too time consuming. When people get involved with
All in all, adolescents can severely be harmed when they use social media. The negative impacts of social media include causing children to lack face-to-face communications, be absent from indispensable experiences, and undergo emotional suffering. All of these effects of social media would make the lives of children difficult. Since using social media is such an unhealthy activity, we all should reduce our time using it and spend more time in the real world. If we do so, we may have a brighter
“Facebook seems to have had a love-hate relationship with its users...American Academy of Pediatrics report addressing a new phenomenon described as "Facebook Depression"(1). Many of the pediatricians argue that social media can create a “skewed reality that makes teens feel alienated”(1). Studies have shown that around 20 percent of teens experience depression before they reach adulthood and Dr. Sara Riveroconil, who has dealt with many teens suffering from depression, claims that the sight of other teens having fun can cause an already depressed teen even more issues. Dr. Riveroconil goes on to say the best solution to this problem is for the parents to be aware of what their child is seeing and doing on social media allowing the parents to monitor it(Is Facebook Making Your Child
Facebook is a type of social networking service which was created by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. At first, it was limited to few people but in 2006 it began to include everyone's membership. Currently, this website has 90 million active users according to Facebook's Press Room. Facebook helps people to communicate with others, to share their photos and information. But if we put a glance we can clearly see that Facebook seems to be destructive on the other hand. It causes depression, relationship failure, and time consumption.
In today’s society, very few recognize that social media is an addiction because as stated earlier, roughly fifty percent of users are logging onto Facebook daily to begin with. Therefore, nobody is looking to make any changes in Facebook’s usage policies or changes in how college students have made social media an addiction. Social behavior expert Megan Sponcil from Youngstown State University in Ohio states that “about 57% of social network users are 18-29 years old and have a personal profile on multiple social media websites” (4). The statistic that Sponcil points out shows that 19-28 year olds are the ones that are mostly affected by social media addiction. Poor performance in the classroom and a serious addiction will continue if this addiction is not broken.
Social media has some positive effects that everyone can benefit from especially teens and preteens. But it also has negative ones that are very dangerous and should not be taken lightly. It poses a great threat to the mental and physical health of youth. The most serious threat is cyberbullying and teens and preteens should be wary of this relatively new form of bullying. They should use caution when deciding to say or post something online and think about who may see it and who it may affect. Social media is not entirely harmful, but the aspects and capabilities of it can have devastating effects on youth.
First of all, “36 percent of people surveyed listed social networking as the “biggest waste of time”, above fantasy sports (25 percent), watching TV (23 percent), and shopping (9 percent)” (ProCon). Above all, studies show that after one checks is or her social media, it takes at least two hours to return back to full attention on his or her task. Social media entices people with one notification, then results in checking and talking to other people leading the person enticed into procrastination. This waste of time leads people, mainly kids, to procrastinate in school and leads them to having poor grades in their classes. “Students who use social media have an average GPA of 3.06, while nonsocial media users have an average GPA of 3.81, and students who used social media while they were studying scored 20 percent lower on their tests” (ProCon). Parents and teachers argue that social media is the cause of our generations downfall. Students had a higher GPA in elementary and middle school than in high school and college because social media were brought into their lives. Social media does not only have an impact on the grades of students, but on their lives as well. Cyberbullying has reached an all-time high, and many students are being driven by what others say about them on social media. “49.5 percent of students reported being victims of cyberbullying and 33.7 percent actually committing bullying behavior online” (ProCon). Social media is one of many causes why people are not persevering and being successful in
While this research gave her a very detailed insight into how social media can have a positive effect on younger people by improving social interactivity it also revealed that when a child is bullied on social media it can have an extremely injurious effect on their mental health. She feels that with the presence facebook especially, it leads to narcissism antisocial tendencies and aggression, while overuse cases anxiety and depression. The two main causes of anxiety and depression due to social media are researched to be bullying and unrealistic expectations such as unrealistic looks, weight and valuables. When teenagers, especially females, see these unrealistic expectations and understand that it is unreasonable to achieve these so called desirable factors they put an immense amount of pressure on themselves as they feel that they aren 't good enough which causes anxiety and depression (Sternberg Clinic, 2015). Another major negative impact that social media can have on an young individual 's mental health when used excessively is impacting the quality of students school work and overall performance. Teens are masters at keeping themselves occupied in the hours after school and way past their bedtime, which results in them not attempting to complete their homework. When students try to multi-task by studying and checking
About 2.8 billion people were using this by the end of 2016, 83 percent of American’s have this, and the growth rate increased by 50 percent in 2016. This happened in the year of 2016. There are over 5 million Facebook users that are under the age of 10. There are more people that own a cellphone than a toothbrush, and Facebook’s population is almost four times greater than the USA’s. All according to 21 Completely Insane Social Media Statistics. Some people think that social media is beneficial due to some reasons such as, it makes friendships, it helps with student’s grades, and it spreads news at a rapid pace. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are only a few of the most common words used in today’s language among children, teens and adults. Such words can be described as popular terms related to what many of us know as social media. In today’s culture, many teenagers rely so heavily on the usage of social media that issues once thought to be revolutionary are now taking place offline and online. In fact, several cases of mental addictions, depression and even suicide have all stemmed from the initial usage of sites such as Facebook, which are otherwise socially accepted as a simple means of communicating with “friends.” While social media does have its advantages, it can also be held responsible for several negative events in the lives of today’s teenagers.
Besides cyberbullying, there are many other negative outcomes for American youth in the use of social media websites like Facebook. For example, many teens are using shorthand and abbreviations when writing or communicating online. Additionally, teens lose themselves in social media, ignore their surroundings and even become addicted to social media. Consequences of this include a rise in obesity, devaluation in family, lack of exercise and decrease in focus on school and homework. Adolescents that use social media more often than others are more prone to “narcissistic tendencies,” “anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders” (Protalinski, 2011). American youth that share more online also display manic, aggressive and antisocial behaviors.
With over 500 million users world wide, Facebook has caused many to have their eyes glued to their phone, tablet, or computer screen. (Kross, 2009). People of all ages are logging on Facebook and wasting quality developmental, family and relationship time. Constantly people are checking up on what othe...
The popular site, Facebook.com, has amassed more than one billion registrants since it started in February 2004. It is another social networking site, just like MySpace.com and Xanga.com, which is common to High School and College students. But this is no ordinary site; people’s lives literally revolve around Facebook. I have a Facebook account and log in at least once a day. I personally believe that Facebook is a fun and interactive site. However, some students may not feel that same way because they have encountered some negative aspects, aside from Facebook’s legal problems.
Facebook is one of the most famous social networking websites which has become a part of the daily routine for most college students. This has led to a question amongst researchers whether students’ use of this networking site influences their academic outcomes. This literature review will examine and synthesize the published current research concerning the impact of Facebook on college students’ academic performance. Even though most studies are inconclusive in determining the relationship between Facebook and academic performance, all researchers contribute to understanding the way that Facebook might affect students’ academic achievement. While some studies speculate that Facebook does not impact academic outcomes, most studies show that there is a significant relationship between Facebook usage and college students’ academic performance, which is indicated by GPAs and students’ engagements.
