There are many different types of students. All students have their own way of studying and learning material. A student’s attitude is the most determining factor in how well a student performs academically. Some students are eager to learn and try their best; however, some students could care less about learning. Each year students decide whether they will succeed or fail in school. All students fall into one category or another. Students can be classified into three categories: Overachievers, Average Joes, and Do Not Give a Rips. Every student knows who the Overachievers are in their class. Generally, the Overachievers get on everyone’s nerves. Overachievers always try their hardest and are willing to do more than is required of them. They have great study habits and always want to make their grade better. Overachievers ask for extra credit work even when it is not needed. They continuously check their grades and talk to their teachers about them. They do well in school, but they also are involved in extracurricular activities. Average Joes are well rounded students who try hard and study only when it is needed. Their parents support them in all of their activities and encourage them to do their best in all that they do. Average Joes do not go out of their way to study all the time. They worry about their grades but not excessively. Average Joes care as much about their activities as they do about their academics. For example, they feel it is just as important to be a good football player or show choir member as it is to be a good student. They sit back and let the Overachievers take over so they will not have to do as much work. They do not volunteer to do more than is required of them. According to a study published in Social Psychological and Personality Science journal, researchers have found that much of a young person’s personality is formed as early as first grade. It is fascinating how important these formative years are to a person’s future life. If our personality and perspective on life is formed by such a young age, it should then be understood that those people closest to us are the ones framing our perspective on life. These perspectives follow us throughout much of our adolescence and even into adulthood. How fitting it seems then, that the categories we find many of our friends fall into appear to be affected by the attention, or lack thereof, received at home at an early age. As I look back at my group of friends from high school, it is clear that we all had someone in our lives were trying to please. The only real difference appears to be the way we went about getting the approval we so desperately desired.
Throughout the length of schooling, students go through various changes. In their first year of school, children are required to make the transition from being at home for the entire day to being in school for a number of hours a day. These transition periods happen many times through the schooling years, but the most drastic changes occur during the transition from high school to college, where students weather numerous lifestyle changes. While each individual student goes on their own journey, certain themes remain common between different students. Studies are done to look at these themes identifying the numerous differences and similarities.

It would be great if during the primary stages of the college introduction the student took inventory of several personal traits that can impact their learning. A student should also be able to honestly assess his or her strengths and weaknesses. Awareness of shortcomings will arm the student with the ability to enhance them. Having awareness of strengths can help the student further develop their strong areas. Parallel to becoming aware of strengths and weaknesses, is becoming aware of one’s dominant style of learning. The question pertained to a fundraising activity and Jackie asked for the teacher to clarify a certain aspect that could be interpreted in a number of different ways.
As a teacher I feel it is my responsibility to prepare my students for the inevitable changes that will occur in their lives by instilling confidence and knowledge while presenting myself as a good role model. Teachers play such an important role in a child’s life, sometimes being their only source of encouragement and support. As a teacher, I want to know my students; their personality, learning style, and academic level, so I can meet their needs and create the best learning environment possible.
