“Leadership style is a pattern of behaviors leaders” used over time as perceived by others’ Blanchard et al., (2008). Hersey and Blanchard argued (Mark 1997) “major factors affect an individual’s response to leadership is the amount of direction and support the leader provides”. As of Blanchard et al.,(2008) “situational leadership styles are divided into four groups: directing, supporting, coaching and delegating”. Based on the writer’s opinion got from articles especially Hersey and Blanchard Articles, the below examples define more in depth what this styles are and how the leader can identify a situation and apply the best leadership style.
2.3.1 Directing / Telling style (S1):
This is where the leader provides particular directions about goals and roles and closely tracks the followers’ performance in order to give frequent feedback on results. In another words, it is where follower lacks the required knowledge and skills when it comes to performing a specific job. However, the staff is interested and enthusiastic about the job and ready to learn it.
In this case the leader needs to explain on the subject of the working system in details to the staff; it’s more about the leader being high in directing than supporting. Since employees do not have past experience on that kind of tasks, the leader’s job is to make sure that the followers understand what the task is and what is required from them in order to make sure that both of them have a clear picture of the expected end results. As of this situation it is best to decrease the leadership and let the followers take over as much as possible because the team works together superbly and they have the knowledge and skill required to do the task. If this team receives any of the other leadership style they will feel over-supervised and this will led to irritation and frustration so the leader requires being low in supporting as well as directing behaviors. Their commitment and competence is fully developed at this level and they can be trusted to do the job without regular leadership or directing.
According to Fiedler (cited in Bolden, Gosling, Marturano & Dennison, 2003)., there is no single characteristic or trait that will create a successful leadership style. Rather, he argues that situations actually shape a general leadership style of a manager. Bolden, Gosling, Marturano and Dennison (2003) have observed that within an environment with repetitive tasks, the most effective leadership style might be a directive one, while a participative leadership style might be required in a dynamic environment. Being an effective leader means to control important specific situations. Taking into account these situations, Fiedler presented three situational components that are considered essential for an effective leadership: leader-member relations, task-structure and position power.
The third type of leadership style is described as situational leadership. Situational leaders assess the environment and the readiness of the employee before assigning a task (Giltinane, 2013, Grimm, 2010). Situational leaders provide direction and support based on the need at the time. Thus if an employee needs more direction than others, situational leader is able to identify the employees need and provide support accordingly. According to Giltinane (2013) situational leaders relationship with their subordinates and provide guidance and direction as needed.
The situational leadership theory states that leaders use different styles and strategies depending on the situation. There are two models that support this theory. After completing the “Leadership Style Questionnaire” and analyzing my results, I have learned what my preferred leadership style is and how that influences how I lead and may be perceived from members of the group. From the results attained from the questionnaire, my preferred style of leadership is directing. This type of leadership style is best for individuals who have a low competency and high commitment level. These types of leaders are highly focused on tasks and less focused on relationships. They make decisions without consulting with the group and communicate without regarding the group’s concerns or suggestions. This type of leader also supervises the followers intently. They are very successful in creating objectives for each follower and the group as a whole to guide the group in reaching a certain goal.

When in a leadership role, it is important to consider both the task and relationship aspects of a situation. Both of these aspects are essential in order to achieve the goal successfully. Task aspects are more or less directly related to achieving the end goal. It incorporates the actions required from a leader’s followers in order to achieve the desired results. It is much more geared towards performance than the relationship aspects are. Looking at the relationship side of leadership, it focuses more so on the followers and their well-being. A leader who is more relationship oriented will spend more time talking to their followers and trying to understand how to motivate them. They try to make more of a personal connection than task-oriented leaders do.
This research has asked us to look into three different styles of management and find real life examples of companies or individuals who have or are currently using such styles of management. To begin we will take a look into the use of an autocratic style of management versus a participative. In this portion we will look into Leona Helmsley and her chain of hotels. Once this potion is completed, our next section will be looking into a centralized style of management versus a decentralized style. In this section of the research, we will be looking into Apple Inc and how they have built an empire with a centralized style of managing philosophy. Finally, in the final section of the research we will be taking a look at how Google has created an informal environment in which employees have direct access to executives and have the ability to share thoughts and ideas that are taken serious and to the heart.
In this paper I will look at the four major leadership styles, their characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and in what situations a particular leadership style is desired. Additionally, I will look at my leadership style and how I acquired this style throughout my career.
