Millions of Americans in the U.S are walking around unknowingly with diabetes. Diabetes is one of the main causes of death and disability in America, yet so many people are unaware of their condition. How is this possible? Diabetes is defined as a set of diseases marked by elevated amounts of blood glucose generated when too little or no insulin is being produced or when the insulin is unable to be produced normally. The symptoms during the early stages of the disease are a drastic contradiction for the affects later to come. During the earliest stage patients usually show no symptoms or symptoms, so common like weight loss and irritability that people attribute it to stress, overworking, or aging. As the disease continues to progress so can the symptoms, and complications.
There are two main types of diabetes: type 1, and type 2. In Type 1 diabetes the immune system has neglected its role as a watchdog for infections and has now taken the role of aggressor, damaging the cells that create insulin. As a result, there is little to no insulin being made. Consequently, the insulin must be given to the patients by means of injection or a pump. Most type 1 diabetics are juveniles, but there are cases with adults. Symptoms generally include: an increase in urination, thirst, hunger, infections, and heart rate as well as and decrease in weight, vision, energy, and healing time for bruises. Additionally individuals with type 1 diabetes have a higher risk of going into a serious diabetic coma. Type 2 diabetes is the product of insufficient amounts of insulin being produced or the inability to usefully use the insulin that is produced. The top predictor for diabetes is obesity. Obesity is the condition of having immoderate fat in the body. African Americans and most type 2 diabetics have a prevalence of being obese. A new term has aroused for when diabetes transpires in an obese person called Diabesity. When you’re obsess the extra fat is making it harder for the body to utilize the insulin to correctly control blood sugar level, ergo increasing your chances of acquiring the disease. Since African Americans have a prevalence of obesity and ninety percent of all type 2 diabetic patients are obsess, this along with the knowledge about the effects of poverty helps increase ones understanding of why the gap is so large.
