Two Woman, Different Decisions
We all have expectations, something that we expect as a result of something we did, but what about the unexpected something that we did but never fathomed the consequences? We often times call the unexpected a “curve ball” and that’s exactly what happened to the couples in the short essays “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway and “Good People” by David Foster Wallace, they were thrown a curve ball. The couples in the short stories have extremely hard decisions to make. The woman have the most important decision to make and the men have to decide to support the women in the lives or make a decision to move on. Sheri will most likely have her baby because she cancelled the abortion and she has bonded with her baby in her womb, and Lane Dean Jr. will marry her because he realizes he loves her. On the other hand Jig will most likely have the abortion because she fears the American will leave her if she doesn’t, and the American will stay with her because now they can travel without a baby spoiling his plans.
Sheri and Lane are in quite a predicament, faced with the chose to keep the baby or to have an abortion. Sheri will undoubtedly keep the baby because she would feel guilty if she has an abortion. In the moment when Lane Dean saw into Sheri’s heart her saw “This down-to-earth girl who smelled good and wanted to be a nurse would take and hold one of his hands in both of her to unfreeze him and make him look at her, and she would say that she cannot do it”(Wallace 219). This moment where Sheri doesn’t even have to speak a word, just by her actions Lane Dean knows that she doesn’t have the heart to go through with an abortion. Lane Dean Jr. knows that Sheri would feel guilt and she tries t...

...has either a good outcome or a bad one. For the couple in “Good People” Sheri will make her decision based on how she feels, and Lane Dean will make the decision to stand by her side. Because both people will make their own choses and will not be forced into making a decision based on the other person’s feeling the couple has a great chance of making it. However, the couple in “Hill like White Elephants” are going to have an uphill battle. Jig will be manipulated into having an abortion by the American, which later on in the relationship will cause Jig to resent him. Even though these stories are about couples making a chose whether to keep the baby or have an abortion, it’s also about begin able to make decisions without feeling pressured. The only way to feel confident in your chose is by making the decision you are willing to live with for the rest of your life.
