The next disciple to be called was Andrew, Peter's brother. Like Peter, Andrew's line of work was in the fishing business. He was just the average fisherman, who fished from the early morning until it was too dark or too late to fish any longer. Matthew 4:18 confirms that the two brothers (Simon Peter and Andrew) were fishing together when Jesus told them to join him. What, I wonder, was Andrew's individual response to Jesus' strange invitation? The Bible states that he followed Jesus, but it says even more specifically in Matthew 4:20 that he immediately or “straightway” followed him. What possessed Andrew to suddenly leave his job, his life, and his family to follow this man? All he knew was that Jesus was truly the Son of the Living God and that was all he needed to know. He at once obeyed Jesus and left anything and everything that was ever of any importance to him. Andrew had done just as Paul wrote years later in Philippians 3:13.
