The Truth about Prostitution
Prostitution is a major problem in the United States today. The way we treat these victims as criminals is simply unacceptable. Found in “Business Insider” a study of San Francisco prostitutes showed that as many as 68% of them have been raped and an astounding 82% had been assaulted. Also found on Business insider is a study conducted on the prostitutes in Colorado Springs which showed that prostitutes are 18X more likely to end up murder victims than those who do not prostitute. So the question remains, what are we going to do about it? Legalizing Prostitution would not only protect these women and give them the chance to seek safety and justice, but would also boost the economy and reduce the spread of STDs.
When it comes to prostitution there is a big taboo button ready to sound anytime someone brings it up, but what if it was a normal subject? The porn industry has always been legal and was grossing up to 10 billion dollars in the US as of 2007. Found by These revenues decreased by nearly 50% during 2007 through 2011, because of all the free pornography on the internet. Creating a need for more revenue, and they weren’t lying when they say “Sex Sells.” If it’s filmed then, paid sex is legal, and even a hot topic. So what makes prostitution so different? Well people believe that the porn industry is a normal part of life that it has always been around, while prostitution has been illegal and consequently is looked down upon. People are so caught up in what they know, that they don’t realize it is actually less vulgar. Paying a woman or man to sexually please you is more personal than paying a couple of strangers to have sex with a camera crew watching, and yet people find it more disturbing bec...

...their work. Currently the people in prostitution are often criminals and without regulations the spread of STDs and other medical complications will occur. Without medical care they will often have nowhere to turn and go untreated. Legalizing prostitution is the right thing to do, not only for all the children and adults suffering from current conditions of prostitution, but for the economy and the country as a whole. Don’t let people hide the truth about prostitution anymore, let it be legal and no longer taboo.

Caroline Stevermer, an American novelist, once wrote, “How dreadful… to be caught up in a game and have no idea of the rules.” Indeed, the quest for eternal prosperity bares an ancient path that allures pursuers into a deep state of oblivion. As one follows this trail, their vision of reality soon becomes blurred by their dreams of triumph. Ultimately, this enduring road guides an innocent pursuer onto the board of another’s game to become their lifeless pawn. Prostitution is this game. This immoral act involves the exchange of sexual services for financial gain. In Canada, the act of prostitution has never been a crime, but the government has combated this atrocity through criminalizing all activities surrounding the transaction. However,
When it comes to the topic of legalizing prostitution, most of us will readily, agree that prostitution is a human right. Where this agreement usually ends, however, in on the question of prostitution being legalized. Whereas some are convinced that it should be legalized, others maintain that it should remain illegal. I agree that prostitution should be legalized. A point that needs emphasizing since so many people still believe that the government should not interfere with their life choices. Considering that it goes against the 1st Amendment, why shall someone not do as they please. A portion of the United States believe that legalizing prostitution would bring down the percentage of people being raped. It can save kids’ lives that are being forced to be
As prostitution is criminalized, this profession is driven underground which undermines the safety of prostitutes. Legalizing prostitution would provide sex workers with regulatory protection and allow this form of work to be recognized as legitimate. As the author of “Think Again: Prostitution” states, “evidence shows, that criminalization of sale or purchase (or both) makes sex workers-many of whom come from marginalized social groups like women, minorities, and the poor-more vulnerable to violence and discrimination committed by law enforcement. Also, criminalization can dissuade sex workers from seeking help from authorities if they are raped, trafficked, or otherwise abused.” Therefore, sex workers are subjected to unfair treatment that could be prevented if this work was legalized and safe conditions were enforced. The author of "Counterpoint: Prostitution Should Be Legalized” states, “prostitution is legalized and regulated in a variety of developed nations throughout ...
Elizabeth Anderson makes a claim that “The attempt to sell gift value on the market makes a mockery of those values.”(Anderson 188) Anderson uses this claim to object commoditized sex (prostitution). There are two premises that Anderson uses to support her claim. The first premise being the gift value of sex cannot be realized in commercial terms and the second premise being that the gift value of sex is more significant that the use value of sex itself.
America is known for the freedoms we receive, but did you know that about 100 thousand women are involved in prostitution, and their rights stripped away by the people who claimed the would protect them, given them shelter, and would provide food for them? No you don’t know media doesn’t cover it, because prostitution is a crime that is swept under a large rug and covered up to protect politicians, government officials, police officers, and so many other organizations reputations. When people think prostitution they think free will, they do it because they want to, it is not true, most women are forced into it. What about protecting women form being used in such a horrible, disturbing, painful, troubling way? These women are forgotten, arrested, abused, violated, and so many are killed. American needs to take a stand and make prostitution illegal in all states. Right now 48 out of 50 states have made prostitution illegal, 1 out of every 10 men in the world have hired a prostitute, prostitution is legal in 22 countries, about 40 million prostitutes in the world, but we can do so much more than make it illegal, we can make the “need” for prostitution disappear for good, we could make more programs for women straight out of college, do a welfare program with intensive background check to make sure the money would be used correctly, furthermost things are healthier, better, and safer than prostitution.
Prostitution has been as issue in many societies around the world for almost all of recorded history. There has been evidence of brothels and prostitution dating far back into human history. Many different societies have different views, ideals, and reservation about the matter. Some cultures around the world view it as a necessary evil for people who need to support themselves and their families. Others view it as morally evil and socially destructive; helping to rot our society from the inside out. Even still there are cultures who don’t view it as evil at all and even a normal part of life. A person’s view on the act is formed largely based on the culture they are living in. Even sub cultures inside of larger one can have different view on the matter, such as religious groups that denounce it, to some groups in the same culture that say it is okay. Even the gauge of how industrialized a country can determine how that culture views prostitution, with many third world countries being more lenient on the matter, and many first world countries being much more strict on the matter, such as the some of the countries in Europe and also the United States.
...inst prostitution, then why some brothels legal, yet the prostitution as a whole are is illegal? Prostitution should not be a crime as the US takes it, because the prostitutes are not committing an inherently harmful act. While there is an argument that there will be spread of diseases, increase in criminal activities, and health effects, all these has been challenged by the proponents side and in fact if legalized, it will lead to a reduction of the above mentioned issues. If prostitution is legalized, it will be regulated and therefore, all these implications being mentioned will be eliminated.
Prostitution is the act or practice of engaging in sexual intercourse for money. It’s estimated that 1-2 million women in the United States work as prostitutes (How Many Prostitutes Are in the United States?). Several people view prostitution as corrupt and unethical, but some viewers do not step to the other side of the track. If it were done in a monitored way, prostitution could be a benefit. Yes it can help protect women, but it is degrading and can be harmful.
While searching the internet, people can easily find websites that promote catering to illegal sexual vices. The problem with prostitution is that the product being distributed cannot to controlled. Females make up a little over 50% of our population. Because prostitutes are born with the tools of the trade, we will never truly be able to destroy all remnants of the profession. The widespread availability of prostitutes within the darkest corners of our society plagues us all. Why then does the underground market for sex seem to take a backseat amongst other, less important social issues? Furthermore, what can be done to hinder the progression of the filth we have let slowly seep into our daily lives?
Little do most know, but on “[a]verage [prostitution] arrest[s], court and incarceration costs amount to nearly $2,000 per arrest. Cities spend an average of 7.5 million dollars on prostitution control every year, ranging from 1 million dollars to 23 million dollars.” Prostitution is the oldest known profession. Currently in 49 countries and counting prostitution is legal. Here in America there is a stigma following the label prostitute. We would rather resort to underground markets of sex labor. Endangering health, rights, and economics. Legalizing prostitution can reduce health hazards by giving heath care, also by giving rights to those that choose prostitution as their profession. In the long term this
The argument for whether prostitution should become decriminalized or not is significant and has valid points for each side. Prostitution is the act of selling or practicing the sale of some form of sexual act. Over a stretch of time, many people and organizations have researched and decided their personal stance on whether the act should be permitted under the law or not. Legalizing this act is thought to bring less sex trafficking, increased public health, and more while the other side argues that the legalization would increase sexually transmitted diseases, increase violent assaults, and more. Sisyphe Raymond’s “Ten Reasons for Not Legalizing Prostitution” and John Haltiwanger’s “Why Legalizing
Refuge from abusive families and limited economic options(Prostitute Alliances Can Combat Human Trafficking,1) Refuge from these families will not only help the workers but their emotional state as well. Their limited economic options will hopefully open up to be able to support themselves. Workers from the sex industry will be able to have the same benefits as other workers from other industries. (100 Countries and their Prostitution Policies,1) Having these benefits will also their increase to save money as well to support themselves or their families. These same benefits include job resources, health resources, etc. Their reputation of working in the sex industry should not be tarnished in any way. Most importantly, prostitution could help our economy with a new source of income. In a typical year, legal brothels generate about $50 million in total revenue and have an economic impact of about $400 million on the state. With taxes and even a price floor prostitution could prove to be one of the United States’ best source of income. If prostitution was legalized it might have made the United States enough money to get us out of the huge debt were in.
The exploitation of prostitution is considered to be one of a serious global issue in most of the countries around the world. Also, the number of prostitution is increasing tremendously each year and seems to be more serious than the past centuries. However, yet very few to none of the countries have completely solved this problem. Saudi Arabia and Netherlands are two examples of the countries that prostitution is still considered to be a problem that the government of both countries cannot ignore. There are different solutions that Saudi Arabia and Netherlands have come up with to solve the problem.
According to ProCon.org, prostitution was a profession that dated back to 2400 B.C. Though many things since then have changed, the practice of selling sex has been more or less the same. What has changed is the way that people now view the practice. Throughout the years the debate has been whether prostitution should become legal or illegal. Organizations like Amnesty International want to push forward the idea of legalizing consensual “sex work” between two adults who are willingly participating because it would help keep those in that line of work safer than they are now. While on the other side of the issue there are
