When I was younger I went to a private catholic school from kindergarten to 6th grade, and year after year the students were taught several key stories from the bible every year from the resurrection of Jesus, Noah and his Ark and the god’s creation of the first humans Adam and Eve. One story that I began to remember as I took more and more criminal justice as I felt it pertained to the information we were learning was the story of Cain and Abel. A basic summary of the story is that Cain and Abel were the two sons of Adam and Eve, and one day Cain became jealous of his younger brother Abel for Abel was favored by God over Cain. In his intense fit of jealousy and rage Cain brutally beat and killed his brother Abel with the nearby jawbone of a deceased animal and as a result was punished by God to wander the earth as an outcast. As I contemplate this story I have come to realize its significance as the first story or if some would believe act of murder. The act of murder, or killing of one human being by another with malice intent, has an extremely gripping effect on our society. While there are a large portion who are terrified by the thought of murder there are certain people who are fascinated by murder and the people who could even think about committing such a heinous act. Much of the information we think we know about murder is fed to us from the media such as TV shows or movies and news channels and has such given us a false sense of insecurity as to who we can and cannot trust when it comes to the safety of our lives. Through the use of national statistics and scientific studies I aim to properly explain some facts about the act of murder such as who is most likely to be murdered or commit a murder, whether or not social fac...

According to John Davidson's essay Menace to Society, "three-quarters of Americans surveyed [are] convinced that movies, television and music spur young people to violence." While public opinion is strong, the results of research are divided on the effects of media violence on the youth in this country. Davidson wrote that most experts agree that some correlation between media violence and actual violent acts exists, yet the results are contradictory and researchers quibble about how the effects are to be measured (271). Moreover, Davidson is not convinced that the media is the sole problem of violence, or even a primary problem. He points out that other factors, such as "poverty, the easy accessibility of guns, domestic abuse, [and] social instability" may have a greater impact on a child becoming violent than the influence of the media (277). Even though other forces may be stronger, media violence does have some adverse effects on the members of society. If senseless violence on television and in movies had no effect, it would not be such a hotly debated topic. What type of effects and whom they affect are the most argued aspects of the discussion.

While many different case studies have been done all over the world, scientists have yet to prove that there is a direct correlation between violent video games and child aggression. Since the start of this quarter, this has been an issue that I have been doing extensive research on. Despite looking into several scholarly sources, I was surprised to see that many of my findings were pretty consistent with one another. For the mort part, what I found through my research was a bunch of statistics from case studies and the interpretation of those statistics from renowned scientists. In many cases, statistics and studies showed slight indications that violent video games have an effect on c...

Television violence is also a cause of both violent and aggressive behavior in teenage boys. According to the evidence in a study done by Turner, Hesse, and Peterson-Lewis, it was concluded that watching television violence had a long-term increase in aggression in boys (Hough 1). In addition to this study, Dr. William A. Belson evaluated fifteen hundred boys, aged thirteen to sixteen years, and he determined that boys with heavy television exposure are more likely to commit violent acts than other boys (Langone 51). In Belson’s study, he discovered that the effect of each violent act on television was collective, and over time, Belson discovered that the boys engaged in many aggressive acts, including painting graffiti, breaking windows, aggressive play, swearing, and threatening other boys with violence (Kinnear 26).
