Psychotherapy is the, “Treatment of emotional, behavioral, personality, and psychiatric disorders based primarily on verbal or nonverbal communication and interventions with the patient, in contrast to treatments using chemical and physical measures." (medilexicon.com) Within psychotherapy there are multiple types of therapy that are under the term psychotherapy, one of those being Behavioral Activation Therapy. Behavioral activation comes from the work of Peter Lewinsohn. "Starting in 1964, Dr. Lewinsohn’s research interests began to focus on the topic of depression" (ORI) There are core principals in Behavioral activation; a few of those are, structure and schedule, changing how one feels by changing what they do, and change will be easier …show more content…

When a person has preexisting vulnerability with added amounts of stress, that can lead to depression disorder. With depression there is a low mood, causing one to withdraw from the world, which leads to a low mood and further withdrawing and its a vicious cycle that is difficult to rid. In depression people exhibit ruminations and avoidance behaviors. Ruminations is when one thinks about a situation and if after two minutes you are still in the thought that everything is hopeless and sad are having rumination. In behavioral therapy people learn to stop using avoidance behaviors and rumination. Then the therapist and client work together to come up with action plans to aid with their disorder. Behavioral activation therapy helps with depression and anxiety, it can be used to help people with their disorder over come and be a fully functioning person. The therapist coaches the client, and work together to develop a plan, steps that need to be taken, and homework or activates for the client. These activities/homework are based on the core principals of Behavioral activation therapy. All therapies are effective, we learned that thanks to the dodo bird effect, however behavioral activation therapy is the most effective for depression and
