1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Transit and transhipment issues have raised a lot of controversy inside Bangladesh in recent years. In Indo-Bangladesh trade talks, 'Transit' refers to the passage across Bangladesh territory of Indian goods to and from the North-Eastern States of India using Indian-owned surface transportation, while 'Transhipment' refers to the same movement using Bangladesh-owned means of transport. The issue is a matter of geographic and economic necessity for India, while for Bangladesh it has security, political and economic dimensions.
Transit facility between BD and India existed in rail and waterways till the outbreak of the 1965 war. After 1971, transit facilities through waterways were reintroduced, which exist till today. SAFTA treaty 2004 provides for transit facilities in all modes of transport, rail, water, air or road by all SAARC countries. The proposal for allowing transit facility to India, launched in the mid-1990s, drew instant reactions in Bangladesh.
1.2 Objectives
The purpose of this paper is to open up the issue, to present some basic facts, and to attempt a qualitative assessment of the opportunities and disadvantages for Bangladesh and to examine the transportation infrastructure to determine the possibilities of transhipment.
1.3 Scope
The issue of transit / transhipment needs to be examined against the infrastructure capacity in Bangladesh including roads, railways, waterways, and sea and river ports. This analysis will help to pin point specific areas where improvement and development will be required.
1.4 Methodology
This paper is prepared based on the secondary data analysis from various sources of books, newspapers, journals and websites.

Across the Indian Ocean, from 650- 1750 C.E., commerce had many changes and continuities. Trade along this route stayed the same with its spread of goods from one place to another, but changed because of the ways goods were traded along this trade route. Ships were still the main mode of transportation however they were made differently. However, countries that traded in the Indian Ocean expanded while African countries still traded heavily. The Islamic Empire and some European counties controlled much of the trade.
After Europeans arrived in East Asia via the Indian Ocean, trade in the Far East changed dramatically moving towards a globalized economy. Between 1450 (39 years before the arrival of Vasco Da Gama) until 1750, the levels of trade in Asia reached a new peak; initial changes came in the form of the addition of new goods; and the eventual addition of colonization into the Indian Ocean Trade Network ultimately turned traditional “trade” into imperial relations. However, the importance of raw materials and the main Asian groups involved in the Indian Ocean trade network largely remained constant after European exposure until the start of British Imperial rule of India. Throughout these three centuries, economic superpowers rose and fell, leadership changed, and cultural exchange was highly prevalent, but the general philosophies, and religions of the societies involved in trade remained intact, resulting in far more positive interaction than in the New World.
The Indian Ocean Basin was a series of trade routes that went all the way from Southeast Asia to Eastern Africa. From 600 - 1450 CE there were changes, but also continuities. The Indian Ocean Basin changed economically and culturally. The Indian Ocean Basin changes included the the spread of Islam and the fact the China’s government was “revived” during this time period. Though there were changes, there were continuities as well. One major continuity during this time was the trade routes themselves; they had not changed while the Indian Ocean Basin was around.
The aim of this paper is to explore and critically analysing two research articles. The critical analysis will explain the importance of the study, evaluate design and research method used in those articles. To identify any gaps it will provide the literature review in those researches and possibility for the new study. The project plan, for the possible research will be developed on a potential gaps and the essay will finish with the conclusion.
