Transgender Equality and the Progression of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. The Constitution was written on July 4, 1776 and here we are now, in 2014, and yet not everyone is created equal. People in America should be able to pursue happiness and within this right they should be able to choose what they want to do, whether it be with their life, body and anything else they are in possession of. Whatever people choose to do with what they have is no business of anyone else’s unless it infringes upon another American’s Constitutional rights directly. So, if women choose to marry women, men choose to marry men or if a man or woman does not feel like they are supposed to be the sex they were born with, then who is anyone else to say what they can or cannot do with their life? Everyone is entitled to their own belief, but individuals should not allow it to affect how they work or live their everyday life.
“Transgender Americans are subject to much social, political, and workplace discrimination.” (Bailey, 194) We live in world where not everyone is created equal. Everyone is diverse and that is what makes our country the melting pot that it is. Matthew Bailey conducted a survey using a study group of transgender individuals. Bailey did not specify whether the transgender’s were transitioning from male to female or female to male, nor did he specify the age group that he conducted the survey with.
