As an aspiring leader I believe a leadership trait I need to improve on is motivation. Motivation is an important aspect of transformational leadership, as you want your subordinates to share your same ideas and goals. However, for me finding the right way to motivate my subordinates is difficult, especially when the task proves to be challenging. At times it seems easier to switch from transformational leadership to pseudo transformational leadership, which allows for my personal interest to come before my followers and removes my authenticity from leadership. This can challenge my core principal of ethics in order to achieve the outcome quickly. This does not align with my core leadership philosophy; therefore, an area I need to improve is being a motivational leader. Transformational leadership requires subordinates to be internally motivated because it requires authentic interest and values (Bono, Judge, 2003). According to an article published by Bono and Judge in the Academy of Management Journal, there are three key ways for transformational leaders to motivate followers. They are as follows: by increasing sell efficacy, increasing the followers self identification with the group, and by linking work value to follower values (Bono, Judge, 2003). By using these three concepts leaders are able to motivate their subordinates and accomplish the tasks. The third way is important to transformational leadership and my leadership philosophy. As a transformational leader you want your subordinates to be motivated because they agree with your objective. As a leader I believe it is most important to continually act ethically in a given situation; as you want you your followers to lead with a defined sense of right and wrong. Furthermore, I believe the best method for employing ethical leadership is through transformational leadership. Instilling your organizations beliefs and values into a subordinate and having them desire to follow the same principals allows for interpersonal relations to grow. These relations only help to benefit ethical leaders. My personal leadership is an ongoing process as I shape who I am and solidify my values and beliefs in alignment with the Canadian Armed Forces. I aspire to be a leader in the forces whose core philosophy is ethics, knowing the difference between right and wrong.
