Theology of the Hammer
In order for us as a society to move forward, I believe that we must adapt the same central ideas that Habitat for Humanity implements. The mission for Habitat for Humanity simply is to eliminate poverty housing by partnering with families to build and renovate houses. They implement "Matching the Word with Deed" (Fuller 21). I feel that this is important because preaching the good word of God is not the only way to help people, as there are many forms of doing God's work. "We know equally well that talking and praying alone will never dig the foundation, nor will piety by itself put up the walls. Only the powerful combination of the word and deed can get the job done" (Fuller 26). I really hate coining old clichés, but simply put " you can not just talk the talk, but you must also walk the walk."
I firmly believe that Fuller's views are very realistic. The term "theology of the hammer" is basically about "…doing more than just talk about faith and sing about love. We must put faith and love into action to make them real, to make them come alive for people. Faith must be incarnated; that is to say, it must become more than a verbal proclamation or an intellectual assent. True faith must be acted out." (Fuller 7). I do not see that as being unrealistic. After all, there is no reason that people should be restricted to praying for people that are in need in some church. If people have the choice to sit in some pew and pray for the less fortunate to get shelter, or build them shelter in God's name, why on earth would these people not want to lend a hand.
Another point to support my argument is the facts. Habitat for Humanity has built and renovated several thousand homes.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization dedicate to building homes for low-income individuals. This organization requires that potential homeowners assist in the building of their home or others to reduce the financing cost of homeownership. This paper focuses on the percentage of property tax revenue, two arguments in favor, and two arguments property tax breaks for Habitat of Humanity homeowner, and case resolution.
How long will it take America’s streets to be clean? “In January 2014, there were 578,424 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States” (Snapshot of Homelessness, n.d.). The number of homeless found on the streets continues to increase and more and more are left without food and shelter. They are left to survive off whatever resources they can find, and most nights it is nothing. This epidemic is beginning to grow out of proportion and action must be made to help change the brokenness found on the streets. Covina is one of many cities that has a numerous amount of homeless. The Calvary Chapel Cornerstone Church should implement a program that reaches out to help the homeless find jobs within the community due to
In order to be radical about poverty, we need to understand the difference between wealth and income. Income is a transfer of money by working or by gifts. On the other hand, wealth is more of a total of accumulated assets that has been stored for a period of time (Conley, pg. 253). Wealth is not distributed equally among the public. (NCH, 2016, http://nationalhomeless.org/about-homelessness/). Declining wages has also caused a lot of stress and increase people’s inability to pay for their housing or other needs. If there are affordable housing, it’s usually in an unsafe and polluted environment or it’s extremely overcrowded that people have a higher chance of being homeless or inadequate housing arrangements than getting their applications accepted (Why Are People Homeless Research, 2016, NCH). Also, privatizing housing will increase the accumulation of wealth of the power elite or those that own property and lands by their pricing in rents. Most people go through depression because of loss of home, jobs, or a sense of self. Often times, the lack education about health and they don’t receive adequate support for medical care if they are homelessness. Poverty is also treated as a criminal offence and if people were to ask for public assistance, they have to prove their eligibility. If they have a criminal record, they are
In conclusion I think that our homeless problem could eventually be rooted out entirely if everyone were to take part in the care of their fellow neighbors. A few advertisements on the television and radio, a little push from our society's leaders and we would be off on the right track. That worked for the recycling program. Now we should try employing this idea for even better reasons and become a better society. I doubt that I will be around to see this idea in use all around the world, but I do hope that I can one day see it use here in New York. To assist all the homeless here in New York would be a very nice thing to see. The best part of it all would be to know what we, as a society, would be able to work together despite all the barriers created by racism and our native nature when it comes to other heritage's.
Not only do we need to find homes for the homeless. We need to help
Jesus began, "repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand," or is it, do penance: "for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Matthew 4:17 K.J.V.). The two words repent and penance have somewhat the same connotation in the understanding of having sorrow for ones’ sins, nevertheless the two words are at the heart of Christianity and Christendom. The Catholic Church exerts the Latin term “paenitentiam agite” to justify its position on sacramental penance. The Latin term can be variously translated into English by the word repent or do penance, though similar, but somehow un-unified as earthly is with spiritual. This concept of repentance and abhorrence of one's sins before God is a heart issue. To do penance for one's sins before God is a heart issue. The dividing factor between the two words is who can know an individual’s heart in relationship to the scripture; As Paul wrote, “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation…but the sorrow of the world worketh death” (2 Corinthians 7:10 K.J.V.). The same factor affects the relationship between Christianity and Christendom, who can discern the motives of human hearts in relationship to history. Christianity is a universal appeal to man's heart, heart of Christendom is a universal appeal for an earthly kingdom. The union of these two or schism as one wishes to perceive, is in the concept of a visible church and an invisible church.
We as individuals alongside the Catholic Church play a crucial role in being able to make a difference in not only the lives of people experiencing homelessness but also to the lives of people who are more disregarded in society. The Catholic Church already undertakes many charity works and distributing of goods to help those around us but with the supporting help of communities and us as individuals we are able to reinforce this idea to help create a stronger more equal society. As individuals we are able to strengthen these ideas through things such as participating in charity works that are being held and giving a helping hand to those around us but a key form of difference we are able to make is mainly by educating those around us about the social justice issues that surround us daily.
Driving around downtown Houston you may notice many people living in the streets. Many people complain about the homeless in the Houston area. This has been a problem that has been going on for quite some time. Homeless people in many cases lose everything forcing them to live in the streets. This can be caused by many factors, poverty and lack of affordable housing are the main two. As a community we can come together and find a solution to help those in need, but what can the
The government should provide more services to combat poverty. During the Great Depression during the 1930s, Franklin D. Roosevelt created the New Deal to provide relief. These services helped a lot of people in poverty. The programs of the New Deal were successful because by 1940, “the economy was roaring back to life with a surge in defense-industry production” (FDR creates the WPA).One of the services that the government offers to prevent poverty and homelessness is the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. This program generates housing affordable to very low and low- income residents of Los Angeles. This program doesn’t really help because “Los Angeles has become a City where rental and for-sale housing is well beyond the reach of the working poor as well as moderate-income residents, which results in increased overcrowding and little disposable income for the other neces...
Throughout my research I found there is a real cry out for action on providing more affordable house not just locally but throughout the country. There needs to be more funding available to build more gear to income or subsidized housing and all levels of government need to take action.
Continuing to develop and evolve the plans in place to aid those living in poverty, while weeding out the ones taking advantage of the system and programs, preventing those who really need the boost from obtaining it. A good example is Habit for Humanity, where the disadvantaged individuals are required to put in work to build their home. Then they are strongly encouraged to support the construction of additional homes in the area and respect the hard work they put into building those homes. This not only gives them a home to live in at a reduced cost but trains them in a new skill that they would not have the opportunity to learn otherwise. We as citizens can take action, but we only have so much we can do alone to help reduce poverty. Volunteering our time as homeless shelters, feeding the hungry, donating money to non-profit companies, these are ways any one can get
People just need to be more trusting and have faith in people. A great example would be the movie “the Blind Side” that is a truly beautiful story about a young African American boy that is homeless being taken in by a family, but others judge them for it. This story in particular is very special in my heart because I have grown up with kids that do not have anything and that come from nothing. In our surrounding area I have seen a lot of pregnant homeless women that do not have the finical stability to even see or visit an OBGYN for their unborn child. We all have the opportunity to change someone life. For starters we could help homeless men and women get the correct attire for potential job opportunities. Also we could take the time to help them find a job that fits their needs just right, and maybe even help them attend job fairs. We could also take the time to help homeless me and women with drug and alcohol addiction put them in facility so maybe one day they can be rejoined with their loved ones. It is a beautiful thing for that organization to help long lost loved ones to come together and finally be
Presently, there are many citizens that have fell below the working class standards of society. The problem is visible and the answer is obvious but it is ignored. Most people could possible prevent or stall homelessness by changing careers. Those with lack of transportations could carpool. Everyone could benefit from spending within their budget and live within their means. That way the tenant can still afford to pay rent or simply find some place cheaper. Perhaps, healthy lifestyle changes for individuals that are victims of abuse or by choice. There are programs and shelters offer to those that are in need. However one becomes homeless shouldn’t be judged for becoming a victim of circumstances, they should be supported and assisted be into society.
It is our responsibility as human beings to set our priorities straight and put the needs of our citizens first. According to Homeless is Serious, “homelessness should be a national emergency since it 's affecting many people.” (Orr 24) The United States Government should take a more active approach in eradicating hunger and homelessness and do like Orr states and make homelessness a national emergency. We as a society are not doing enough and the “United States Government is doing the least. We need to put ourselves in their shoes and stop being ignorant. We must take action and treat them with compassion like they 're a part of our family. (Roleff.
Some people that live in poverty do not have anywhere to call home, others “die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world” (Shah 1). “The modern urban household is an extremely expensive thing” (Galbraith 508); this is why we, the people, should provide safe and affordable shelter for families in need of an improved shelter or a shelter at all. A variety of organizations exist to construct homes for low-income individuals. These organizations include both faith-based enterprises and secular groups. In either case, these organizations tend to utilize donated supplies, cash support and volunteer labor to build durable, safe homes for economically disadvantaged individuals and families. One of the most popular organization is an ecumenical Christian ministry, Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity began constructing homes for poor families in 1976. By the end of 2009, the organization constructed over 350,000 homes in 3,000 communities around the world. During the period from its founding through the end of 2009, Habitat for Humanity provided safe, comfortable homes for over 1.75 million people. As you can see, this organization has improved the lives of many and continues to do so. Providing homes for the people in need of a safe shelter will improve the success of society and lead us out of
