Industry Analysis
1. Product scope
Tractor is the primary farm equipment used in the agricultural sector. Tractors have a major contribution in the mechanisation of agriculture. Farm tractor reduce the human labour and help increase the agricultural output. There is an ever increasing demand for agricultural produce due to the increase in population, hence tractor have a major role to play in increasing agricultural produce by automating agricultural produce. However, tractors are also used for applications including transportation, power generation and industrial applications such as forklifts, loaders, road rollers.
2. Segment wise share
The Tractor industry is segmented based on the horse power of the engines. It is classified into:
1. Less than 30 HP (<= 30 HP)
2. 31 HP to 40 HP (> 30 HP and <= 40 HP)
3. 41 HP and 50 HP (> 40 HP and <=50 HP)
4. Greater than 50 HP (> 50 HP)
The segmentation is done based on the following factors:
1. Region wise demand for each of these segments of tractors is different.
2. Shift in demand for tractor power.
These segments also vary in terms of market share, regions in which these tractors are preferred and the demand for each of these tractors.
Small Tractors (<= 30 HP) Medium Range Tractors ( >30 HP and <= 50 HP) Large Tractors (>50 HP)
Soil Conditions Soft Soil All soil types in India Hard soil

Apart from the usage of tractors in the agricultural sector it also has other commercial purposes like transportation, construction and also in airlines, hotels and resorts for hauling luggage and it is of very less proportion.
Because of the above specified purposes, tractors serve as critical inputs in many ways and the strength of this force is low.
Threat of Substitutes:
In case of agriculture the substitutes available are bullock carts, human labour, light commercial vehicles, lorries, and SUVs. Apart from these tractors are also used for transport activities and act as an input for a lot of activities. Thus the strength of this force is low.
The industry attractiveness considering the above five forces, is moderate.
Between the two years International Harvester made the Super M-TA they produced 26,924. The Super M-TA was International Harvester’s first tractor to have live power. Live power made it so you could push in the clutch on the tractor the Power Take Off or PTO would not stop spinning. (New McCormick...

However, whereas Caterpillar and John Deere manufacture machinery that are substitutes for each other, the success of complementary products are also crucial. Whereas Caterpillar is a company that is based on construction equipment, John Deere is first and foremost an agricultural company. More specifically, a corn-driven company. This is never more evident than when looking at 2015. The 16% drop in stock price in 2015 coincided with a very poor corn harvest, but things are looking up. The USDA recently forecasted a record-high in corn-production, along with soybean production. Corn production is expected to increase by 11% in 2016 compared to 2015, which will greatly help with John Deere equipment sales. In addition, corn prices are finally expected to begin to recover in the next three years (Clark, 2015), which provides yet another positive factor for the growth in sales of John

People have long used truck-like vehicles to transport goods, but as societies have changed, the need for better, more powerful ways of transportation has grown alongside the development of society. Improved vehicles require better means of movement, just as improved roads and movement among places has allowed for the development of better vehicles. The trucks of today fulfill many job descriptions, but their usage is solidly defined in the human consciousness: a truck is not mistaken for any other type of vehicle. From its early use as “a cart for carrying heavy loads” to the modern “motor vehicle for carrying heavy loads,” the word
Farmall brand in from 1939 to 1953, it is a two row plow crop tractor. It was the most produced of International Harvester's, with about 390,000 models produced over the 14-year run. Farmall was a model name that later became a brand name for tractors manufactured by the American company International Harvester. The Farmall name was usually presented as McCormick-Deering Farmall and later McCormick Farmall in the evolving brand architecture of IH. New technologies not only allowed farming to become more efficient, but made the process of shipping crops west much easier. The most important innovation in farming itself was the horse-drawn combine, which required many horses to operate, but allowed wheat, a popular crop to grow in the west, to be harvested en masse. (Document D) However, railroads were also incredibly important for farmers, as they allowed Wheat, cotton, and corn to be transported across the country
Agriculture—it’s something that not very many people know much about. However, it is important for us to survive. Almost everything in our everyday lives is agriculture-related, from the food you eat to the clothes you wear.
Trucks will someday drive themselves out of warehouses and cruise down freeways without the aid of humans or even a driver’s cab — about that there seems little disagreement. The question is how soon that day gets here.
The tractor is a constant symbol that repeatedly came up throughout the novel. The tractor is what began to drive the African-Americans on the plantation out of work and away from their homes. It is also the tool that the Cajun, Felix Boutan rode when he was beat by Silas and the mules. Beau Boutan was riding the tractor when he went after Charlie. The tractor symbolizes one of the main tortures of the African-American community in Marshall. It not only drove them out of work and their homes but it also led to their dearth, especially in the case of Silas and Charlie. Gaines used the tractor as a motivator to the old men. It gave them more reason to take a stand. The shotguns that the old men carried also were symbols in the novel. The empty shells symbolized the weakness and ineffectiveness of the old men. They offered no resistance and let the Cajuns walk all over them. Their lives were as useless as the shotguns with empty shells that they held in their hands. However, when the time came to fight, the old men were ready for war. They decided to stand up for themselves and gain back their dignity. They went from useless old men to men who could make a difference. They had fully loaded shells, power, and pride which affected Luke Will, who “looked worried, real worried” when he realized their conviction (Gaines

Conventional agriculture refers to the process by which farmers break up the soil using farm equipment in order to speed up the decomposition of organic matter in the soil and prepare the soil for the planting of seeds. This process is referred to as tillage, and is accomplished using certain farm implements which have been developed and specialized specifically for this task. No-till practices effectively eliminate the entire tillage process, negating the need for the equipment, gas, labor, and maintenance costs that are associated with soil tillage. The elimination of this step in the farming process can decrease farm costs a great deal, and allow many farmers more fre...
Threat of substitutes in market as best quality is not always a priority for some customers as they are price sensitive.
Agriculture has changed dramatically, especially since the end of World War II. Food and fibre productivity rose due to new technologies, mechanization, increased chemical use, specialization and government policies that favoured maximizing production. These changes allowed fewer farmers with reduced labour demands to produce the majority of the food and fibre.
