Total quality management is “a system of management based on the principle that every staff member must be committed to maintaining high standards of work in every aspect of a company 's operations” (citation). There are eight key principles to consider when discussing TQM: customer focused organization, leadership, involvement of people, process approach, system approach to management, continual improvement, factual approach to decision making, and mutually beneficial supplier relationships. A customer focused organization is when organizations depend on their customers, they try to understand current and future customer needs, try to meet customer requirements, and make a huge effort to exceed customer expectations. Within leadership, leaders try to establish the unity of purpose and direction, create and maintain the internal environment around them, and people become fully involved with the achievements through the organization’s objectives. The involvement of people includes every team member that can assure great quality and the management staff and staff members have solved problems and can recommend improvements. The process approach describes the organization as a collection of interdependent systems and processes and where managers can study and solve problems with the use of tools and techniques for the process. The system approach to management can be described as identifying, understanding, and managing a system. This process contributes to the organization’s effectiveness and efficiency in reaching and achieving its goals. Continual improvement is a never ending process in the system, “Plan-Do-Check-Action”. I think it would take a lot for physicians to be more involved in this process making because they think usually adding a process is going to cost money and time. Making things seem beneficial and worthwhile to physicians would spike a greater interest and could help maintain a relationship with the physicians. According to Essentials of Total Quality Management: A Meta-Analysis, if top management is more involved within the TQM process and implementation, it will encourage the physicians to participate in the projects. With top management involved, it will also show the physicians that this is a serious matter and they aren’t just trying to blow something over. Improvement is huge within the healthcare industry and having everyone on board that is involved just makes things that much easier.
