Also known as “termination of pregnancy,” abortion is a common medical procedure used to end a pregnancy by removing the embryo or fetus from the uterus before it is capable of surviving outside the womb. Abortion is a highly controversial topic, and the abortion essays here examine it from a variety of perspectives.

Many women experience spontaneous abortion. This occurs without medical intervention and is known as miscarriage. A missed abortion occurs when the embryo dies in the uterus but is not expelled by the mother’s body.

Miscarriages can occur for a variety of reasons―genetic defects, disease, trauma as well as biochemical incompatibility (also known as ABO incompatibility) between the mother and the fetus.

Most abortions take place during the first 12 weeks of a pregnancy. Some women undergo induced abortion at a later stage, when the fetus has a good chance of surviving outside the uterus. This is known as a late termination of pregnancy.

Contrary to popular belief, abortion is a perfectly safe medical procedure when properly done. On the other hand, unsafe abortions are one of the biggest causes of maternal deaths, particularly in developing countries. In the United States, childbirth is 14 times more likely to cause maternal death than abortion.

In the United States, abortion is a common method to end an unplanned pregnancy or when tests reveal genetic abnormalities, mental deficiency, or physical deformity in the fetus. Abortion is also recommended when the mother’s physical or mental well-being is at risk or when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest. Many women choose to end their pregnancy for social, economic, or personal reasons.

In the recent decades, abortion has become a highly controversial political topic in the US. Several religious and affiliated organizations are actively working to overturn Roe vs. Wade, a landmark decision by the US Supreme Court in 1973 that made abortions legal in the nation. People who support a woman’s right to choose are labeled “Pro-Choice,” while those who believe that abortion should be illegal because a fetus should be considered a full human being, and thus, has every right to live are called “Pro-Lifers.”

To gain a deeper understanding of the arguments for each side of the pro-choice vs. pro-life debate, take a look at our curated list of essays and research papers on the topic of abortion.
