Today’s technology is advancing at a tremendous speed, yet some inventions still remain unchanged and inspiring. Even though there are many inventions existed that benefit our life, only certain inventions could be still alive because of their benefits brought to the people. In “Don’t Change a Thing” by Therese Oneill, Oneill introduces us the six eternal invention that still exist today. Also, Jessica Guynn’s article, “Douglas Engelbart Dies at Age 88”, explains how the passion and inspiration of Engelbart brought to the field of computer create today’s revolutionary computer. Despite the fact that many inventions exist, many people abandon them or eventually change them completely. However, some inventions succeed in preserving and become timeless because of their usefulness and inventor’s passion and inspiration built in the invention.
Firstly, usefulness is really one of the most important criteria that determines the value and lifetime of an invention. Without any benefit that helps people, an invention will be soon forgotten because the purpose of an invention is to bring changes and positive effect to our world and human community. Therefore, usefulness plays as major part that contributes to a successful invention. For example, the rocking chair is a effective invention that brings advantage to people. With the thoughtful idea, it provides a function that “automatically adjust[s] their center of balance to whoever sits in them, bringing each sitter a uniquely comfortable position” (pg.4). With this helpful benefit, it improves lives of some people because it relives “people from suffering maladies” (pg.4). These small insects are vectors that spread disease rapidly therefore the invention of flyswatter helps us to solve the problem. Finally, usefulness is important to an successful invention.
In conclusion, the top two criteria for a successful invention are usefulness and the passion of inventor contributed to the invention. Most remaining invention still exist is because of their benefit brought to people. Rocking chairs, teapot and flyswatter they all are beneficial at different ways despite their different functions. Still, without inventor’s passion and effort built in the invention, it will not succeed. Although there might be some other criteria make an invention successful, only the passion of inventor and passion contribute a big part of its success.
