Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan. These are the top five education systems in the world according to BBC news (Coughlan 2). If I skip down twenty more spots I would finally find our great nation ranking 25th in education. Many people ask, How is our nation’s education system so poor? Why are Asian countries beating us? This is a simple answer: we have adopted the Common Core. There is also a simple solution to getting our education system ranked number one again: get rid of Common Core.
So what is common core? Common core is the Department of Education’s attempt to control what every high school student should be learning in mathematics, science and english. Common Core by definition of the government is, “a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy” (Common 1). The website continues on saying that, “For years, the academic progress of our nation’s students has been stagnant, and we have lost ground to our international peers” (Common 1). This is nobody 's fault but our national government because they are trying to intervene. I believe there are many reasons that Common Core is wrong for our education system, the first being the staggering amount of testing Common Core brings.
ECA’s, ISTEP and Rise tests are three mandated tests that kill time in the classroom for Indiana educators. If Indiana adopts Common Core we will be adding to these tests. Bascom reports that a massive load of standardized tests would be added and not just at the higher level grades. Bascom compares this testing increase as an unwinnable race by saying, “Common Core tests are akin to a high-stakes 100 meter dash with increasingly-higher hurdles. This has created a hostile learning environm...

... agree with these people as these standards are not worth $700 million dollars in taxes for the American people.
Support for this horrible idea has tremendously gone down. According to a poll conducted by Next Education, teacher support from 2013 to 2014 has decreased from 76% to 46% ( Bascom 3). In a general poll, support of the CCSS has fallen 8% from 65% to 57% (Bascom 3). Clearly the thirty percent drop in teachers must be a concerning statistic for the Department of Education. In conclusion, the Common Core will not improve education for our great country. It is a one size fits all approach to education that will not work. It dramatically changes the way math and english will be taught and hurts our educators. It not only affects our children but our checkbooks as well. Let’s put a stop to Common Core and make a concerted effort to better our Education program.

Essay Breaking The Five Paragraph Theme Barrier By Thomas Nunnally

- Based on my high school experience, my view of writing has always been that the five-paragraph essay will be able to carry me through my life, and therefore, I would not have to learn another essay writing style but master this one. But in the essay “Breaking the Five-Paragraph-Theme Barrier” by Thomas Nunnally, we are told that “Students need to understand that they practice on the FPT to learn the principles of effective composition, principles that can be applied to any writing task, not to master a single format that will answer all their writing needs.” (70-71)....   [tags: Writing, Essay, Five paragraph essay, Thought]

A necessary part of our society that in the year 2016, is still considered, “one of the nation’s most significant and still unfinished accomplishments. (Mondale)” Many political movements have been made to better the education system, including the Leave No Child Behind, Obama’s Race to the Top and, most recently, the Every Student Succeeds Act, or the ESSA. United States Public Education System Essay

- Despite the low ranking on an international scale, United States public education system is not as bad as the media depicts. When looking at the PISA rankings, it is not an apples-to-apples comparison. Not only does PISA use different sampling criteria for different countries, it also compares homogeneous populated countries of about 5 million to diverse countries with populations of about 310 million. It is unfair to compare a small country with a large country using the same scale; however, if one compares a state like Massachusetts, that has a similar population as a small country, like Finland, the results do not seem as bad (Wadhwa 2011)....   [tags: Education, Teacher, School]
