The virtue of courage is known as a consistent act of purity and conquering in all values of fear, therefore reckoned the greatest of all virtues. To be courageous, one must have the ability to fight against the opposing force of society and firmly construct a self-encouraging mentality that can encourage yourself to move on. The acts of courage can be approached with a sense of justice regardless of the results, in which one contests with oneself, another person, or society. Atticus Finch portrays a heroic figure by consistently persevering despite facing judgement and criticism from society and stands up for his personal convictions and stands up for his personal convictions. He risks his social reputation and physical safety to defend a poor, unemployed black man, Tom Robinson. Also, he jeopardizes the chance of Jem being punished to defend the gallant, Boo (Arthur Radley) from redundant attention. Tom Robinson is a poor and unemployed Black man who is falsely accused of raping Mayella Ewell, but the truth is that he was innocent and had the inability to physically harass anyone because his left arm was 12 inches shorter than his right, and this was evaluated by Atticus and Jem that he wasn’t capable of succeeding in any form of abuse. Several residents of Maycomb opposed him especially from Mrs. Dubose naming Atticus “nigger-lover” and his own sister disagreeing with his decision, and residents frowning and neglecting him for his integrity for the black community. However, Atticus commits and chooses to do his duty of serving Tom Robinson to justice. During the case, he was aware that he was bound to lose this well-fought case because the jury had doubt to decide on the justifying verdict saying “Courage is when you know y... ... middle of paper ... ...dley. The novel carries several moments of courage; displaying Atticus showing a sense of purity and positive roles as a character. Defending Tom Robinson can be registered as the most intriguing factors of the story; defending the meagre, coloured man against a falsely accused case of rape and supporting Tom from predicaments of a group of rioters protesting against his jail’s doors. Atticus frequently secured his position effectively as a heroic figure by persevering despite the doubts and opposition, which included of his family and friends of Maycomb, which occurred during his moments at time against.
