The luxurious R.M.S. Titanic hit an iceberg on April 15, 1912. The ship was sailing off the coast of Newfoundland with 2,240 passengers and crew on board. Over 1,500 people lost their lives in the sinking of the ship. The tragic end of the Titanic was only the beginning of new precautions and safety regulations for ships. The infamous demise of the Titanic created an interest that is still present today. On March 31, 1909, construction of the Titanic began. Designer, James Andrews, laid the first keel plate in the Harland and Wolff Shipyards in Belfast, Ireland. It took around 15,000 men to construct and build the Titanic and its sister ship, Olympic, who was also being built at the time. On April 2, 1912, the Titanic set sail from Ireland to England. The Titanic was briefly opened for a viewing party on April 5, 1912, for the paying public after arriving in Southampton. The morning of the maiden voyage, the captain arrived on board with the crew at 7:30 a.m. Around 9:30 a.m. the second and third class passengers boat trains arrived and the passengers boarded the Titanic. The first class boat train arrived at 11:30 a.m. from London. On April 6 at 12:00 p.m., the Titanic set sail. They traveled 84 miles before stopping in Cherbourg, France, to pick up more passengers. 270 passengers boarded the Titanic there. At 8:10 p.m., the Titanic departed Cherbourg and headed 370 miles for Queenstown, Ireland. 120 passengers boarded at Queenstown. The ship set sail from Queenstown at 1:30 p.m. and headed for its first and last transatlantic crossing.
