Alcohol was illegal and people such as Lucky Luciano and Al Capone made it a profit. In order to do so, they had to grow up and rise in the ranks of organized crime to make their own empires. They involved themselves in multiple illegal activities such as gambling, extortion and prostitution. The prohibition amendment did not do what Congress and the government wanted to do. They thought that banning alcohol would raise the morals of men and women. They also thought that crime would decrease but they thought wrong. Not only did crime increase, but it increased more than what was before and ever expected creating some of the most violent and deadly times of the Great Depression. The roaring twenties was a time of Great Depression. Not only did the stock market crash and people had no money with poverty and starvation being at an all time Murray 2 low, illegal activity increased. The prohibition amendment went on from 1920 to 1933. It was meant to be a nationwide ban on the sale, production, importation, and transportation of alcohol beverages. Gangsters and other opportunists saw this as a chance to make rackets in the illegal production of alcohol called ‘bootlegging’. Giving people tools, opportunity and money to rise to power. In order to do so, people had to pay their debts and do illegal activities. Sometimes that debt meant doing illegal activities and maybe kill, steal or do other things that would and could possible get them in trouble with the law. But in the rules of prohibition and the mob or mafia, there were no rules.
