This letter seeks to give an overview of the problem of time management among college students who are the target audience in this paper. The paper also highlights on the probable solutions ascribed to it. It also seeks to identify a simple three part model that capsulate a viable solution to this problem if followed to the latter. The problem of time management can be said to be universal not only affecting students but also other people in careers. This problem is seen to transition from a person’s life from different cadres of his or her engagement specifically from home, school and at work. It is also a problem that is internal and not external. This calls a need for people especially students in college to warm up to the fact that if they are unable to manage their time appropriately while in school it is apparent that as they transition into their working life they will demonstrate the same effects still while on the job. It is therefore, vital for the students to realize the actual root causes of poor time management and arrest the same in good time. Some of the stated causes include: lack of prioritizing tasks, lack of setting personal goals, failing to manage distractions, procrastination, multitasking and last but not least in effective scheduling of tasks. These causes can be remedied by the use of a model that has been explained in the paper and advises the students to adopt three simple approaches which are: Proper Planning, Stress Management and Right Perception. In conclusion, the students need to adopt these approaches in a realistic and practical way. This means that the students need to have a high level of discipline and a high caliber of pro-activity so as to achieve positive results on the same. After completing this assignment I realized that my time management is very “mediocre” according to my scores on my time management quiz. I was actually very surprised because I thought that my time management was acceptable not great but at least decent. I scored 41 points on my quiz, meaning that I do need to improve my time management. Though, I am actually very close to being good, the score for good is 45 points. Time management has always been an issue for me. I plan myself on a daily basis to try to accomplish everything I must do. Time, the most valuable thing humans own, managing it, no easy task especially to a young undeveloped mind of a teenager, but efficiently managing time is a whole different task in itself. Students take part in extracurriculars and sports in which adding a responsibility to their schedule, but a successful student can handle the responsibilities of playing a sport. Additionally, a large part of being a highly effective student is knowing how to efficiently complete assignments, first by planning out a certain day or if the assignment is due the next day than planning out a time during the day where they complete the assignment. Once attending university, not only is a person learning to find a balance between studying, attending or finding a job and enjoying leisure activities, but they are also discovering or developing skills they did not know they had. One of the most important skills that will be developed is that of time keeping and being able to prioritise activities and tasks effectively. Many students find it difficult to organise their social life along with the tasks of handing in assignments and getting into lectures on time, so the idea of list making and setting clear, achievable goals for themselves is a necessity. Dividing goals into key steps, helps the achiever of being able to carry out the task well, and also allows them to be able to reflect upon the their progress both during an after the achieved task. All tasks prepared and given to students during the academic process are provided with a time deadline and it is expected that they abide by this impecably, with unpleasant consequences if they do not. During this time, students learn that without time management skills that they learn within the academic structure it would be very difficult for them to be able to proceed into the working world without basic found skills having penitent consequences if not adhered to. During many classes and lectures within the academic world, lecturers and class leaders explain and maintain morals and practises that they developed and mastered during their time of entering the world of work, and ensure their aptitude and competence is inflicted and understood by their students. By ensuring these skills are shown by members of a higher rank, they are influencing and encouraging people to have the grounds to suceed in a pressurising enviroment.
As an adult student, it is not easy to manage the demands of work; spouse and children; and the need to set aside time to read, research, write, and complete specified assignments. The biggest complaint conveyed by adult students is that they simply don’t have enough time. The fact is time management is crucial so you don’t lose sight of your goals.
