Time is a funny thing. It has this way of wearing down memories until they are like the soft edges of an old photograph. I remember a time when I was in high school, a captain of the school’s mathletes team. We had competitions every 3rd Wednesday of the month and it was usually held at one of the opposing schools. It wasn’t until I was voted to specialize in the oral competitions, when I realized that I was as good as my coaches said I was. In orals, you had 10 minutes to complete a set of problems on a given topic, and you had to present them in front of 3 judges also in 10 minutes. My very first time competing in this form of contest was very impromptu. I was handed 5 problems and the clock started. As I was finishing them up and checking my solutions time was up. I then had to go my presenting class to demonstrate how I got my answers. I went walking around in what it seemed to be like circles panicking because I couldn’t find the room until I came across someone to ask them where was room 2027. There I was rushing to the room and as I entered, there were only 5 minutes left to present. Nervous and shaking a little, I managed to introduce myself and apologize for being late. I then talked so fast that the judges were having trouble writing their critiques. When I get nervous I tend to talk fast, and I knew I was behind on time so I was really trying to move quickly. When my 5 minutes were up, I left and sat out in the hall and tried to process what had all just happened. My perception of 20 minutes felt like 3 when I was put in a difficult situation. Every minute in life is undefined. Natasha Trethewey’s “Theories of Time and Space” is about the abstract view of how we move forward and experience living in the present and not ...

...” I am not exactly sure why I like it, but maybe it’s the idea of having a large heavy blank book to write down things you encounter on this journey. There is a lot happening in this book and I think that it will set the tone for the rest of the book.
I think what the author is trying to say is that every minute in life is indefinite. Though you can think and remember the past, you can only live in the present. At the end, she refers to a photograph: “someone will take your picture:/ the photograph — who you were–/ will be waiting when you return.” Even if you physically return to a specific “space” that she speaks of in the title, the time has changed, changing you. This idea sets up the book because it is beginning the journey of reading something for the first time that could change you. Though you can think and remember the past, you can only live in the present.
