3 tiered model: High School Drop- out Rates When we think of high school graduation we usually think of its great benefits and as we get older we are able to realize how crucial high school graduation is to our future. However, although this is true there are still very low graduation rates for students of color and lower economic status. In order to put in place any type of preventions or interventions we first need to understand why it is that students are dropping out of school. According to some studies the top reasons why some students drop out of school is either because they are pushed out, pulled out or because they simply fall out (Doll, Eslami, & Walters, 2013). Understanding the different factors that can play a role in a student dropping out is crucial and identifying the indicators of dropping out of school is equally as crucial. The three indicators of dropping out of school are attendance, behavior, and course failure also known as the ABC’s (The George Washington University Center for Equity and Excellence in Education, 2012). In order for this program to be successful I thought it would be important to understand the reasons why students end up dropping out. In a study I found students gave three top reasons of why they dropped out, which were either they were pushed out by the school itself, pulled out by outside needs and or fell out by students disinterest in school. Understanding the different reasons for students dropping out is the beginning of this program. The first tier of the program is then to address the school population as a whole and start by addressing those three possible factors that can cause students to drop
