Introduction
Thousand Splendid Suns is a novel by Khaled Houseeni. The novel explores the lives of two Afghani women, Mariam and Laila, as they journey through hardships in the late twentieth century. The first half of the novel focuses on Mariam, the bastard child of a successful businessman. When she runs away from home to her father, he rejects her and her mother commits suicide. She goes on to marry Rasheed, a widowed storeowner in Kabul. The second half of the novel focuses on Laila. She is an intelligent, well-educated young woman and has a flirtatious relationship with her neighbor Tariq. War breaks out and Tariq’s family flees while Laila’s family is killed and she taken in by Rasheed. She marries him and Mariam and Laila slowly become friends. Through a series of events, Mariam ends up killing Rasheed to protect Laila and is subsequently executed. Tariq and Laila end up together and Laila goes on to be a teacher in her hometown. Though the novel focuses on their experiences, it also shows and sets up the history, culture and mythological system of both Islam and Afghanistan during an extremely horrific and turbulent time.

Islam is a monotheistic religion that is revealed through the prophet Muhammed using the Quran. It consists of five pillars, shahada, which is a confession of faith, salat, which is prayer, zakat, which is charity or giving, sawm, which is fasting and hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca. These are the foundations of the religion. Zakat, sawm and hajj are not seen in the novel but shadaha and salat are. Shahada means Allah is their only God and there are no other gods before him. This is seen in the novel when they destroy the buddha statues because they think it is
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is a story of two Afghan women, from seemingly different backgrounds, whose paths cross and lives are changed by each other. Although it may seem like this story is one of resilience and optimism, A Thousand Splendid Suns is clearly a story that represents pain and hopelessness.
Mariam has built a mutual relationship with Jalil in her childhood, with weekly visits every Thursday. Mariam has hid behind a wall of innocence, and Jalil helped her get past the wall with the harsh realities of the world. Mariam was an innocent being at childhood: she was stuck indoors in Kolba. Mariam does not know what is going on around her home, because she has not experienced the outdoors as well as others. All she gets at is from Jalil’s stories, and Mullahs teaching. She does not understand that the world is not as as happy as it seems. In Khaled Hosseini’s novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini uses Jalil’s character to show development in Mariam's life, in order to emphasize how significant the impact of trust breaks Mariam’s innocent in the story.
...in A Thousand Splendid Suns, but without combining the characters into one family the thought would be incomplete. Each of the characters compliments upon the other, Aziza’s ability to forgive pairing with Zalmai’s capacity for change, Laila’s desire to return and rebuild and Tariq’s devotion to her. Without these elements combining, the characters would be isolated and the people they represent would be as well. Without Zalmai and Aziza, two children of two different fathers, being accepted and loved, and uniting as one family, Hosseini would not be able to use them as an embodiment of the unification of Afghanistan.
In 1,000 Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, a girl named Mariam lives in a small shack with her mother Nana in Afghanistan. Mariam’s father is a wealthy cinema owner who she adores even though Jalil, the father, has numerous wives and children. He only visits Mariam once a week and tells her stories and brings her gifts. “Nor was she old enough to appreciate the injustice, to see that it is the creators of the harami who are culpable, not the harami, whose only sin is being born” (Hosseini 4). From the beginning of the book, Mariam was not wanted by either her mother or father, giving her an unstable home life that further affected her outside life. In the novel, Mariam is forced to marry a man named Rasheed who becomes verbally and physically abusive towards her. Rasheed and Mariam take in a woman named Laila to help
The Sun Shines Bright, one of John Ford 's most personal films remains one of his most forgotten. Taking place in 1905 (according to Tag Gallagher), it follows four distinct story lines all of which are based upon the deep fractures found within the small Kentucky town called Fairfield: 1.For all intents and purposes, the main storyline, concerns the protagonist, William Priest (affectionately known as 'Judge ' or 'Billy ' throughout), and his reelection campaign against the haughty, Yankee, racially intolerant son-of-a-carpet-bagger, Horace K. Maydew. 2. The return of orphan Ashby Corwin, and his wooing of the black sheep of the town, Lucy Lee Lake. 3. The arrest of U.S Grant, a black teenage banjo player on the charge of raping a local white girl. The lynch mob that marches into town is driven out by Judge Priest and the real culprit is found, and shot. 4. The melodrama surrounding the town secret of who Lucy Lee 's (birth) mother is and the subsequent reveal.
“A man's heart is a wretched, wretched thing. It isn't like a mother's womb. It won't bleed. It won't stretch to make room for you.” I will assemble, examine, and interpret Chapters 3 “Nice to Eat You”, 12 “Is that a Symbol” and 13 “It’s all Political” from “How to Read like a Professor” to investigate and draw conclusions on Mariam from “A Thousand Splendid Suns”. In addition I will also analyze how the turn of events in the protagonist, Mariam’s, life challenges or support morals, values, and beliefs of the world as a whole.
The themes, motifs, and characters in both A Thousand Splendid Suns and Life of Pi compare in their similarities. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, the protagonists, Laila and Mariam grow up in two separately, different lives, until their world collide, and become very close, living with their abusive husband Rasheed. In Life of Pi, the protagonist, Pi, is lost at sea after a shipwreck, where he has to try and survive lost at sea, but while he is with a Bengal tiger. The novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, and the movie Life of Pi share both similarities and differences between the themes and protagonists, where both the book and movie show the will to live, freedom, and truth. They also relate to each other with the same motif
The term monotheism is significant to Islam, meaning that a belief in only one God. The first article of faith in Islam is the belief that there is no deity but God (Allah) and that Muhammad is the messenger of God. A belief in a number of gods or in the extension of God’s spirituality to any person is strongly forbidden. Islam rejects the human points that the Christians and Jews added to their doctrines, such as the incarnation of God. It has been estimated that over ninety percent of Muslim theology deals with the implications of Unity. God, while One, is referred to by ninety-nine names (Fisher 233).
Centered around revelations of the Prophet Muhammad, Islam was founded thousands of years ago. According to Mary Fisher, author of Living Religions, followers of Islam are commonly referred to as Muslims (Fisher, 2008 p. 381). Very similar to the structures of both Christianity and Judaism, Islam is a monotheistic religion, where worshipers believe in a single God, commonly referred to as Allah, according to Mary Fisher (Fisher, 2008 p. 386). In fact, many Muslims recognize some of the prophets from Judaism and Christianity, such as Moses and Jesus, as messengers of God, according to Mary Fisher

Khaled Hosseini’s novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, tells the stories of women in Afghanistan in the late twentieth century. Hosseini shows the women’s strengths, weaknesses, tribulations and accomplishments through their own actions, and how they are treated by other characters in the book, particularly the male characters. Hosseini portrays men in A Thousand Splendid Suns to create themes of justice and injustice within the novel. The justice, or lack thereof, served to the male characters is a result of their treatment and attitudes toward the female characters in the book and towards women in general.

Islam has remained the same in its principle beliefs of Allah, His Angels, His Prophets, His Books, The Last Day and his complete authority over destiny and has also changed over time to ensure that Islam remains a living religious tradition. Over its history Islam has had many significant people including Al Ghazali and Aisha Bint Abu Bakr who have ensured that Islam remains living in the hearts and minds of its adherents.
