Thomas Jefferson who was the first secretary of states, the minister of France, the governor of Virgina and the congressman, and who became president in the 1800s contributed to the American society in various ways. He was very significant and did so many things that were very beneficial and important to the American society. Thomas Jefferson wrote the declaration of independence and was so fond with equality, freedom and justice for all citizens and everyone. He never gave up and kept trying. Even during his retirement years, he did not retire and instead ran for the office of president in 1796 losing and becoming vice president, but then regaining his position as president later on (p.661). Jefferson showed that he was all about equal treatment and freedom. He mentioned that both races where made different in color by nature for a reason. Also that having both races in the same country will not work out, so either the black leave or white (p.669). Thomas Jefferson in the Notes on the State of Virginia began talking about the freedom of slavery but then a great shift happened and he started talking about the difference of race and that they should not be combined. He described their physical appearance and criticized them by describing them in a way that made them seem so different from everyone else. Thomas Jefferson criticized them by saying “ they had less hair on their face and body, that they secrete less by the kidnies and more by the glands of the skin which gives them a very disagreeable odour (p.669). The ways he criticized them in made them appear so different from the white people as if they where a different species. He even mentioned that the white people are more prettier and the black people are just ugly, because of the white peoples flowing hair and symmetry form, so black men prefer white women over black just as Oranootans prefer black women over their own (p.669). Comparing there characteristics to be similar in a way to animals and saying that they are just not the same as people from other races and also mentioning that they are dangerous (p.670) is criticizing them and not helping Jefferson’s argument of wanting everyone to be equally treated. Jefferson describes their imagination to be dull, tasteless and anomalous. Jefferson compares the black race to Indians and says that he has never seen the black race use their imagination and make paintings or sculptures and are only good at making music. Thomas Jefferson was one of the most influential people of the 18th century because he was one of the founding fathers of America, he was the founder of the University of Virginia, and he was the creator of many life changing inventions, which drastically changed the world.
In “From Notes on the State of Virginia,” Thomas Jefferson includes some proposed alterations to the Virginia Laws and discusses some differences between blacks and whites. First, he describes one of the proposed revisions regarding slavery: All slaves born after the enactment of the alteration will be freed; they will live with their parents till a certain age, then be nurtured at public disbursement and sent out of state to form their own colonies such that intermarrying and conflicts can be avoided between blacks and whites. Next, Jefferson indicates some physical differences between blacks and whites, including skin color, hair, amount of exudates secreted by kidneys and glands, level of transpiration, structure in the pulmonary organ, amount of sleep, and calmness when facing dangers. As he notes, these differences point out that blacks are inferior to whites in terms of their bodies. In addition, Jefferson also asserts that the blacks’ reasoning and imagination are much inferior to the whites’ after he observes some of the art work and writings from the blacks. As a result, based on his observation, he draws a conclusion that whites are superior to blacks in terms of both body and mind. However, Jefferson’s use of hasty generalization, begging the question, and insulting language in his analysis is a huge flaw which ruins the credibility of his argument and offenses his readers.
One comparison is seen in this quote “Besides those of colour, figure, and hair, there are other physical distinctions proving a difference of the race. They have less hair on the face and body.” (Shuffelton 146). Frank Shuffelton states that these comparisons threatened even southern planters as they thought Jefferson was a bit too harsh (Shuffelton xxv introduction). People would commonly think that many southerners supported this, yet many were disturbed. In query eighteen, Jefferson elaborates the idea of wanting emancipation of African American slaves. This shares the idea of how several people thought that slaves are included of individual freedom offered in the constitution. He writes, “I hope preparing, under the auspices of heaven, for a total emancipation, and that this is disposed,
Thomas Jefferson, an educated, well respected career man, served as governor of Virginia, secretary of state, and president of the United States. The Revolutionary era, during the 1770's, proved to be one of America's most victorious times. Despite the casualties the American colonies suffered, they proved to be stronger than their ruling land, Britain, and won the right to be a free land, becoming the United States of America. There were many men involved in the establishment of the government, the laws regulating states and people, and individual rights in the construction of the United States of America. Two men stand out as instrumental to our founding principles: Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Thomas Jefferson was an educated, articulate and accomplished man from a well-respected family. He had a great understanding of farming and of the relationship between man and his environment, working diligently to balance the two for the best interest of each. He “considered himself first and always a man of the land” (Jewett, 2005).

Many people admire him for having been a person who firmly believed in the ideals of democracy, equality and freedom. However, at the same time, he kept slaves, and made other contradictory decisions and this made other people to question his beliefs. The struggles of Grant and Jefferson share a common theme, man’s search for meaning. Grant has the advantage of a college education, and while that may have provided some enlightenment, he remains in the same crossroads as Jefferson. Grant sees that regardless of what he does, the black students he teaches continue in the same jobs, the same poverty and same slave-like positions as their ancestors. Grant has no hope of making a difference and sees his life as meaningless. Though Jefferson’s conflict is more primal, it is the same as Grant’s struggle. Jefferson is searching for the most basic identity, whether he is man or animal. It is this conflict of meaning and identity that bring Grant and Jefferson together.
