There come about times in anyone’s life when we undergo a sense of loneliness or isolation. It can be fond of problems with your family or just being away from a place you once called home. In the short story “This Is How You Lose Her” by Junot Diaz Papi plays a dominant role in aiming to separate his family from the supposedly “unknown lifestyle of an American”. Unlike other families, Papi tries to keep his family trapped inside, making sure they were apprehensive around their environment. This exemplifies how certain conflicts shows a distinction between the families, how it can affect an individual’s character, and how living in a strange community can cause you to feel alienated, vulnerable, and dependent. He emphasizes to Yunior that this is not what Americans do , he made sure that they know, since they moved into a new appropriate place they should try to fit in , and practice their culture. Another scene that shows that Papi is embarrassed of his family is when the mother realizes that she needs to socialize with other people than being trapped in the house hardly chatting to her sons and husband. Papi on the other hand refutes of her proposal making up excuses on how untidy she is degrading her.”Look at this house. Look at your children. Me da verguenza to see them slouching around like that”. (pg.143) He presumes that his family is not ready for guests, and comments on how unstable and shameful the house and children are. Papi is concern regarding to his appearance and people judgments of his family. Other than refining their appearance to satisfy Papi, it also changes their personality. For the mother she was both a father and mother figure in DRwhen the father was never around. She was the head of the household and had authority over the children. He shows the separation between the father, the mother and the two sons, controlling their access of the unwelcoming community. Papi believes in order to associate with others you have to be courteous and mannerly. Since he is quote on quote experienced he knows that it’s best he pins them in the apartment and never attempts to teach them a new language they have to adapt to. Nevertheless this shows how it can cause problems in the household, turns an individual’s persona and can become solitude and lack communication since they are defenseless when it comes to depending on
