A theory represents an idea that is research based with the premise of helping society by better understanding some happening. These are created by imperfect humans and must be critically evaluated. Theory represents new information that if used correctly can lead to positive change in an organization. In the case of leadership and decision making theory many have evolved. They represent a variety of ways leaders can make decisions and lead organizations.
“Decisions faced by educational leaders do not always present themselves as neatly-packaged, well-defined problems conducive to clean and tidy resolution through predetermined decision protocol (Johnson & Kruse, 2009). It is for this reason that many theories for decision making exist. Since administrators lack omniscience, they must rely on different models at different times depending on the context. It would be absurd to subscribe to only one method and limit one’s self to the benefits and freedom of the others. I have noticed in my own professional career that the satisficing model does seem the most common.

The strategic thinker must use ‘environmental scanning’ techniques to be aware of factors critical to decisions (Johnson & Kruse, 2010). Once upon a time one could lead with personal and will. Today one leads with those traits but also the understanding of the complexities and dynamics of the organization and how to get subordinates and those outside to work toward a shared goal (Guthrie & Schuermann, 2010). This is how one reads the decision and chooses their decision making model. In my own experience this skill is what allows school leaders to have long and successful careers. If all else fails remember that stuff happens and as long they are legal and ethical, simply forget them and move on (Patten, 2004).
