In the play Twelfth Night, Shakespeare conveys the themes of love, deceit and misconception through the conflicts that arise from a woman cross dressing. Specifically love, both genuine and selfish love, is a characteristic that is crucial to the the causes and solutions to the problems in the play. Antonio portrays his true love countless times in the play, where he extends his compassion, kindness and care for Sebastian. However, Orsino consistently conveys his ‘unbound passion’ for Olivia, but, through his many attempts, he never once considers Olivia’s desires and happiness. .
Antonio displays sincere love for Sebastian through his numerous acts of kindness and trust and his courage to undergo any difficulties for the one he loves. Firstly, Antonio conveys his pure love for Sebastian when he expresses his concern for him in Illyria. Upon arrival in Illyria, Antonio explains to Sebastian, “My desire [...] did spur me forth:/ And not all love to see you [...] But jealousy what might befall your travel, [...] My willing love/ The rather by these arguments of fear/ Set forth in your pursuit” …show more content…

The two ends of this spectrum of love is accurately depicted by Antonio and Orsino. Love is a crucial part of one’s daily life and the way in which one expresses his/her love -whether it be sincere or for self-gain-, really contributes to how and if one will receive love in return.
