what is imagery?, Imagery is the use of vivid description, usually rich in sensory words, to create pictures, or images, to stimulate your memory. These memories can be positive or negative which authors use to connect and engage a reader by describing the five sense’s, hearing, taste, touch, smell and sight. By using imagery a author can draw the reader inside a book making him/her feel connected to the character, place, thing or event and to try and make the reader feel or see what the author wants the reader to see. This is achieved in the novel maestro, written by Goldsworthy. The short novel, is divided into seven sections which talks about Paul Crabbe development as a person and as a musician. Each section also unfolds further information about the life and career of Edward Keller. Edward Keller is a Viennese pianist who teaches Paul which is his student. It is written from a journal sporadically kept by Paul in his youth but edited by him as a disillusioned adult, after Keller's death.
The first main image outlined by Goldsworthy is when Paul first meets Keller and a instant impression is gained. leaving the responder with a clear image of Keller that is remembered through out the novel. Keller is from a European decent struggling to fit into the town which differs him from Paul , these differences are reminded to the reader through out the book . It is because of these differences of this stereotypical European that gives Paul and the reader such a strong image of Keller which is kept in both the reader and Paul’s mind. This variance is given to the reader when Goldsworthy tells the reader of Paul’s first impression of Keller: a boozers . incandescent glow. The pitted sun-coarsened skin-a cheap, ruined leather. And the eyes: an old mans wobbling jellies(3). This can be related to the movie-The Wogboy, (directed by Aleksi Vellius), which gives great insight into other's perceptions of the stereotypical personas in today's society. The “wogboy” can be related to Goldsworthy’s novel, two of the main characters are from two different backgrounds the women being from Australia and the man from European who lives like a typical wog in an Australian city.
Misleading impressions directly relate to the concept of appearance versus reality and the naive nature of the first impression. Maestro is a novel written in first person and the opening constructed from a number of simple sentences that create a visual contrast between the rustic physical characteristics of Keller and the strict material characteristics of his clothes. This descriptive language highlights the visual absurdity of the scene, the climate being no factor in Keller’s choice of clothing, yet his physical being of a ‘boozer’s incandescent glow” demonstrated distinctive imagery. The narrator also reflects that Keller’s greeting, his suit and accent had passed judgement from his father, and the narrator’s first impression was tainted by his father’s visual perception. Emphasis is also put on the naivety of Paul’s first impression of Keller, only years later can the narrator suggest that the judgements he made of Keller were ‘misleading’. The narrator adds ‘of course’ suggesting the naive closed personality of the narrator in the opening scene has changed.
The effective use of color and imagery by an author, combined with poetic language can give the reader a detailed image in their mind. Edith Wharton uses this technique in her writing in the novella Ethan Frome. Using imagery, the author paints a vivid picture with words using color to set moods, develop characters, and foreshadow coming events allowing the reader to fully experience the world of Ethan Frome.
Distinctively visual landscapes are portrayed to be a fundamental impact and influence on an individual’s identity, and how one’s relationship with setting highlights their personal growth and maturation. Goldsworthy’s metaphorical depiction of Darwin as being rich and changing in its abundance of nature reflects Paul’s personal growth and development. The extended metaphor “everything thing was larger than life in the steamy hothouse of Darwin, and the people were no exceptions.” Symbolically signifies the hot, humid climate that acts as a sense of normality, as the fertile environment is metaphorically allowing him to grow and mature. Goldsworthy explicitly juxtaposes Dr Crabbe’s perception of Darwin with Paul’s interpretation as he engages the readers in the differing opinions towards the country. Donald Hall describes the use of imagery in poetry as a device that "makes us more sensitive to [literature], as if we acquired eyes that could see through things"(p 530). Imagery creates vivid details that deal with one's sense of sight, sound, touch, smell, or taste. These details can be seen in Theodore Roethke's "My Papa's Waltz" because the senses of touch, sight, sound, and smell appeal to the reader in order to better explain the feelings of each character in the poem. Roethke's use of imagery creates a negative picture that is painted by the son of an abusive father.

One prime example of imagery that the author uses is in paragraph 3; where she tells of a moment between a man and a woman. In this narration she states the time, year, outfit of each character described, and what the female character was doing. These details might come across as irrelevant, or unnecessary, but this is Didions way of showing what the blueprint of notebook it. Using imagery reinforces the foundation of the essay, and what the essay’s mission was.

Through the rich usage of symbolism, dynamic and static characters as well as imagery, Bormand offers his analysis on the characterization of Ethan Frome as well. Through the comparison of each critical work’s beginning, or introduction and conclusion, the variations in style and approach are quickly perceived.
Imagery is the use of symbols to convey an idea or to create a specific atmosphere for the audience. Shakespeare uses imagery in Macbeth often, the most prevalent one, is blood. I believe he uses this as a way to convey guilt, murder, betrayal, treachery and evil, and to symbolize forewarning of events.

The author can use an unlimited amount of symbols, similes, and metaphors that produce an atmosphere for the reader to visualize the story effectively. In the poem "Daddy," written by Sylvia Plath, the author utilizes numerous clusters of images to represent the fury and wrath of a crazed woman haunted by her father's frightening and domineering disposition. Plath uses this imagery to depict the emotional chaos controlling fathers inflict on their offspring.
In “A Rainy Morning”, the imagery appeals to the senses of sight, touch, and sound. Some of the imagery in this poem that appeals to the sense of sight would be: “a women in a wheel chair”, “black nylon poncho”, and “long white fingers”. Also, some imagery that appeals to touch and sound would be: “strike just as the chord fades”, “her wet face beautiful in its concentration”, and “the wind turns the pages of rain”. The function of imagery in the mid-sixteenth century play Othello by William Shakespeare is to aid characterisation and define meaning in the play. The antagonist Iago is defined through many different images, Some being the use of poison and soporifics, sleeping agents, to show his true evil and sadistic nature. Othello’s character is also shaped by much imagery such as the animalistic, black and white, and horse images which indicates his lustful, sexual nature. Characterisation of women is heavily dictated by imagery used to show the patriarchal gender system of the time. Some of this imagery is that of hobbyhorses and the like showing that they, Desdemona and Emelia, were nothing better than common whores. Othello’s view at the start of the play is contradicting of these patriarchal views with Desdemona and Othellos’ true love overcoming these stereotypes and we are told this through imagery of fair warriors and the like. The power of deceit is shown also through imagery of spiders and webs, uniforms and other such images. Also the power of jealousy is well defined by imagery. The handkerchief, green-eyed monster and cuckolding imagery are prominent in defining this theme.
Andrew Marvell in his poem describes a young man convincing his fair mistress to release herself to living in the here and now. He does this by splitting the poem up into three radically different stanzas. The first takes ample time to describe great feelings of love for a young lady, and how he wishes he could show it. The idea of time is developed early but not fully. The second stanza is then used to show how time is rapidly progressing in ways such as the fading of beauty and death. The third stanza presses the question to the young mistress; will she give herself to the young man and to life? Although each stanza uses different images, they all convey the same theme of living life to the fullest and not letting time pass is seen throughout. Marvell uses imagery, symbolism, and wonderful descriptions throughout the poem. Each stanza is effective and flows easily. Rhyming couplets are seen at the ends of every line, which helps the poem read smoothly.
