At the beginning of the 60’s new black groups started to form there was the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee who were headed by Martin Luther King, Jr., Stokely Carmichael and James Meredith. During one of their marches to protest against the 1965 Voting rights Act Meredith got shot. Also during this march Carmichael came up with the slogan “black power” which he would later use to help empower the group that he switched to in 1967 the Black Panther Party.
Martin Luther King, Jr was a member of multiple groups that protested for Black rights. King was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) he was one of the main members and his alliance with the NAACP dated back to the early fifty’s. “In 1957 the NAACP awarded him the Spingarn Medal, its most prestigious honor” (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People , 2012) to Martin Luther King for his efforts to get equal rights for everyone. “Dr. King's involvement with the NAACP..., through his leadership in the various boycotts, marches and rallies of the 1960's, and up until his assassination in 1968.” (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People , 2012) King was also part of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference group.
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was a group that was dedicated help to better or influence the civil rights movement. “The ideals for this organization he took from Christianity; its operational techniques from Gandhi.” (Elsevier Publishing Company) King was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and headed the organization for eleven years until his assassination. King had gained respect from some audience because of his soft tone. He established his ethos to readers, especially to the white, by saying, “I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state” (King, Martin Luther, Jr.). To connect his idea to the real world, he used the image of Apostle Paul left the village to carry the gospel of Jesus Christ as it’s his duty to carry the gospel of freedom beyond his hometown.
Ever since slavery black people have been fighting for their freedom time after time and many different activists had different ways of expressing themselves to get their point across. But in the mid 1960s Stokely Carmichael had his own way of pushing freedom in the black community. He gave more awareness to the words “Black Power” as he was the leader of SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) but soon changed his approach once he saw nonviolent protesters were being brutalized in the South. He had a speech at the university of California in 1966 where he addressed this issue of freedom in the black community in which he challenged the “civil rights leadership by rejecting integration and calling on blacks to oust whites from the freedom movement.” Because of Stokely Carmichael the freedom movement for blacks was heightened and was taken more seriously by whites and by other blacks and is also a main reason for blacks having the freedom we do today.
During the 1970’s, the United States experienced "Watergate," the most famous political scandal in American History. It was a scandal that began with a break in and ended in resignation. On June 17, 1972 five intruders were caught and arrested for illegally entering the rooms of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington’s Watergate Complex. "The investigation of the break-in lead directly to the reelection campaign of President Richard M. Nixon and unraveled a web of political spying and sabotage, bribery and the illegal use of campaign funds" (Washingtonpost.com). Two-and-a-half-years later along with a number of court hearings led to the 1974 resignation of Richard M. Nixon. Nixon became the first President in U.S. History to resign. During all the political drama the United States brought an end to an unpopular war and made great strides in space exploration.
The fifties was a learning year and the 60's became the time to express everything that they learned. The 60's was a time for new and innovative ways to entertain the people. Since the blacklisting continued in Hollywood, the making or films became very difficult to express. The restrictions, such as the production codes, kept the big corporations to produce films that had no interesting subjects. These films also had to be films that show no signs of communistic values. The film industry was failing to bring in the audience to the theaters. With the TV making a big wave all over, the U.S. the film industry was losing it is money. Then in 1961 something big happened, 20th Century Fox took apart its lot. This act was one that led to a chain reaction. Studios were assuming the role of distributors. This would allow the independent companies to come in and add a new flavor to the silver screen. During this time films changed it's traditional film making ideas. Things started to get graphic, more violent, sexual and more expressive. Movies had found a new look and with the production codes now gone and the blacklisting ending, there was an explosion of ideas that would be presented to the United States.
Dr. Martin Luther King Junior was an excellent speaker and activist during the civil rights movement throughout 1954-1968. The civil rights movement was a time of racial injustice and unfair treatment towards people of different races. During that time many African Americans boycotted and protested against the unfair treatment in America at that point in time. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in the case of the Brown v. the Board of Education. This was a very historical moment because their ruling eliminated, the "separate but equal " doctrine. Their ruling called for school integration, although most school were very slow in complying if they complied at all. The NAACP, National Association for the Advancement of Color People, viewed this ruling as a success. The schools lack of the obedience toward this ruling, made it necessary for black activism to make the federal government implement the ruling, and possibly help close the racial gap that existed in places other than public schools. During one of the boycotts for equality, a leader emerged that would never be forgotten. Dr. Martin Luther King, who was leader of the Montgomery bus boycott, quickly became the spokesperson for racial equality. He believed that the civil rights movement would have more success if the black people would use non violent tactics. Some say he was adopting the style of Ghandi. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, SCLC, was formed by King and other activist in 1957. They were a group of black ministers and activist who agreed to try and possibly help others see the effects of a non violent movement. Also following the strategies set by the SCLC, a group known as the SNCC or the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, began a string of sit-in and campaigns as the black population continued it's fight for equality. It was the undying efforts of the two groups that paved the way for the march on Washington. This march which drew a crowd of at least 200,000, was the place that Dr. King, gave his famous "dream speech." Both the SNCC, and the SCLC were victims of lots of threats and attempted attacks, yet they continued to pursue freedom in a non violent fashion. However near the late 60's they had another problem on their hands. There was a group of activist known as the Black Panthers who were not so eager to adopt the non-violent rule. The believed that the civil rights movement pushed by Dr. King and is non-violent campaign, which was meant to give blacks the right to vote and eliminate segregation, was not solving problems faced in poor black communities. This Black Panther group, stabled the term "black power", which was used a sort of uplifting for the black self esteem.
Although this is a simple statement, he is essentially putting himself on the same “level” as them. By connecting with them, they are more likely to persuade. In his second paragraph, King establishes his trustworthiness by saying “I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. We have some eighty-five affiliated organizations across the South, and one of them is the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights” (King, 1963). A president is someone who is typically trusted and has everyone’s best interest at heart, so by presenting his status as president, the audience is likely to respect him.
Martin Luther King Jr. born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, was a Civil Rights activist during the 1950’s until his death on April 4, 1968. He held many non-violent protests against segregation. He gave famous speeches, wrote books and also won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. In 1953 he married Coretta Scott. To them, four children were born. King was a part of many groups and organizations that dealt with segregation. On December 1, 1955 the bus boycott began. An African American woman named Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger. After hearing of the situation, King decided to lead a bus boycott. During the spring of 1963 in Birmingham, Alabama M.L.K was arrested and sent to jail; from there he wrote a letter which he called his “Philosophy of Nonviolence” (“Martin Luther King, Jr.”1).

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference which was a african american civil rights organization was founded in 1957 by King (Martin Luther King, Jr. 1929-1968). SCLC was developed to advance the nonviolent way to handle the civil rights (Martin Luther King and The Global Freedom Struggle).
