Known as a master of the short story form, Guy de Maupassant was a French writer who had a number of works published. From books to short stories, they capture and demonstrate the lifestyle of a nineteenth century individual, particularly in France and Normandy, where most of the stories take place. The collection of eight stories, The Necklace and Other Short Stories, contains different elements that may or may not appeal to readers. War and life morals are elements that may appeal to readers alongside prostitution and language, which may not. This collection of short stories demonstrates how the Franco-Prussian War influenced de Maupassant since he was a part of it. He is able to demonstrates how life was during the time he was alive. With a number of stories, such as “Boule de Suif” and “Mademoiselle Fifi,” regarding the war, he is able to give readers an insight of how life was during that time. Ernest Hemingway’s ambiguous “Soldier’s Home” stirs not only the emotions of the readers, but also Hemingway himself. While reading his work, one cannot ignore the substantial amount of historical references that Hemingway was subject to while he served in the war. The setting of “Soldier’s Home” is an important distinction. Taking place in the early 1900’s, the short story revolves around Krebs: a young soldier who has returned to his hometown after fighting in WWI, just as the author did in 1918. In “The Necklace,” Guy de Maupassant uses setting to reflect the character and development of the main character, Mathilde Loisel. As a result, his setting is not particularly vivid or detailed. He does not even describe the ill-fated necklace—the central object in the story—but states only that it is “superb” (7 ). In fact, he includes descriptions of setting only if they illuminate qualities about Mathilde. Her changing character can be connected to the first apartment, the dream-life mansion rooms, the attic flat, and a fashionable public street. [This is a well-defined thesis statement.]
In Guy de Maupassant’s story, The Necklace, he utilizes situational irony in order to highlight the theme. He displays this irony in order to reveal several themes that can be observed in the story. One of the major themes in this short story is how appearances can be misleading.
Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace” is a twisted and broken fairytale.* Although this short story does embody some elements of fantasy, there is not merely enough evidence to support the claim that it is in fact a “ modern fairytale.” Fairytales often include themes such as enchantment, which is shown when the main character dreams, but is this really such an enchanting thing? Another theme found in fairytales is an encounter with the main struggle, in “The Necklace,” the main character also comes to face with a challenge, but this challenge does not accurately fit the characteristics of an encounter. A third example of an element of a fairytale is the presence of a weak male figure. In this case, there is a weak man but he does not remain weak throughout the story. One final characteristic of a fairytale is the journey that is taken, in “The Necklace,” the main character does take certain steps, but are these steps really considered a ‘journey’? As will be learned, none of these elements found in fairytales truly conform to “The Necklace,” therefore not making it a “modern fairytale.”+

We all have a place that we like to go to relax. For some, it is a quiet place and a good book to read. Others may enjoy spending quality time with friends and family. Guy de Maupassant enjoyed being near water. Maupassant “was a passionate lover of the sea and of rivers” (“Guy de Maupassant”). In his short story “Two Friends”, distant friends run into each other and decide to relive a peaceful activity they once shared: fishing. Maupassant’s love of the water influenced the content of this story. If the reader looks carefully, they can see several parts of the story that may have been influenced by the author’s life and views. Maupassant’s short story “Two Friends” is an allegory about his view of the ideal Frenchman because Maupassant portrayed the main characters as patriotic, brave, and opposed to war.
Guy de Maupassant came from a wealthy background and lived in France, Normandy. His parents were divorced so he spent the early years of his life mostly with his mother. Guy de Maupassant went to a boarding school and soon after went to live with his father. Later on in his life a war took place, threatening his country, and Guy de Maupassant went to fight. This very war was the reason that Guy de Maupassant lost his wealth and luxurious life earning himself a life of working for his money like many other men. Whilst working as a clerk Guy de Maupassant grew up trying to perfect his writing with the help of his mother’s good friend who was also a famous author in that time. Many years later Guy de Maupassant went from working as a clerk to full time writing finally getting a story published.
Guy De Maupassant was French writer who wrote many short stories. Maupassant was also a poet, novel writer, and travel book writer (Literature network). He is considered to be one of the greatest short story-writers in France. His biography describes the sense of emotion he puts in his stories related to his suffering in life. Many of his short stories, relate to everyday life in France during the 1800’s (Literature network). The way the author wrote his stories shows his humor, and good flow to the story which reveals a lot about his personality. Guy de Maupassant is a realist whose claim to fame is the style in which he conveys political and socioeconomic themes in his literary publications. He achieves his writing style by putting small unfortunate life events under a spotlight. His literary performance is described in his biography from Cambridge, the writer says “He exposes with piercing clarity the small tragedies and pathetic incidents of everyday life, taking a clear-sighted though pessimistic view of humanity” (Halsey, par. 1). The moral of Guy de Maupassant’s story “The Necklace” seems to be suggested by the line, “What would have happened if Mathilde had not lost the necklace?” If Mathilde had not lost the necklace, or in fact, even asked to borrow the necklace, she and Mr. Loisel would not of been in debt ten long years. Because Mathilde had to borrow the necklace to make herself and others like her better her and Mr. Loisel’s economic situation had become worse than it already was. I think that the moral of the story is that people need to be happy with what they have and not be so greedy.
"The Necklace" or "The Diamond Necklace" is a short story by Guy De Maupassant, first published on 17th, February 1884, in the French newspaper Le Gaulois. The story has become one of Maupassant's popular works and is well known for its ending. It is also the inspiration for Henry James's short story, "Paste". It has been dramatised as a musical by the Irish composer Conor Mitchell; it was first produced professionally by Thomas Hopkins and Andrew Jenkins for Surefire Theatrical Ltd at the Edinburgh Festival in 2007.
