Personal responsibility may be perceived in many ways, but it is imperative to understand the relevance of why it must begin with our self. First, one will never develop an attitude of responsibility if they always look for others to complete their task. It is a necessity that one has personal discipline or their efforts to be responsible will prove to be fruitless. Second, being responsible yields great rewards and acting responsible is a clear sign of maturity. A responsible individual looks to no one but self and no matter what the outcome; they are willing to stand by their decisions. (Maltby 2009), “Personal responsibility is concerned with people taking individual accountability for their decisions and actions, together with the outcomes they create and their impacts on others.” (para.1)
Personal responsibility is being responsible for a given task and seeing it through to completion. When one activates personal responsibility in effect they are committing to an obligation or task. One primary key to use when activating personal responsibility is discipline. Discipline is the ability to adhere to guidelines or rules to complete a specific task. As we proceed to complete our education, it is essential that we develop good discipline. In this regard, there is a relationship between personal responsibility and collegiate success. For a student to be successful, it is necessary that he embrace discipline and responsibility. A student that never completes an assignment is not exercising discipline and the likelihood of their success is slim, but a student that consistently fulfills their academic obligations is on the path to success. Finally, I believe a character must be responsible. Responsibility comes with experience, and is something a person has, or they do not have. I am responsible by maintaining a grade point average greater than three point eight five while participating actively in numerous extra curricular activities and working more than a twenty-five hour workweek. With great power, comes responsibility in which I will always have.
I found that some of the examples did not fit but in general I could relate to this as a strength theme. While I find myself sometimes having trouble focusing and waiting until a deadline is right in front of me, I do make sure to get things done. I almost always follow through and on the off chance I cannot, I make sure to make it up to that person one way or another. In these cases, I cannot apologize enough for my mistake and feel terrible about letting them down and not being able to follow through. It is my responsibility to own up to my actions and apologize for failures. Morals and ethics are a big part of this. If I find that something is going on that I cannot morally agree with, I will not support it. I believe in doing what is right at all times in effort to be responsible and a good asset to any team I’m on. Growing up, I had trouble saying no as I wanted to be involved in everything and take care of every task that came my way. I remember my dad telling me that I could be the person who tries all trades but masters none. While I still find myself volunteering for many things, I have learned to double check that I can take on a task or activity and do the best I can without causing trouble with my current involvements. The hardest aspect of growing up and becoming an adult is claiming responsibility over oneself. For most individuals this level of maturity occurs when they leave high school and begin college. The author’s experience with personal responsibility began when he left high school; it wasn’t the big change that most college students received like being independent and paying for their own tuition, or living in dorms far away from parental guidance. Instead he was a college student whose parents provided him with everything he needed, from food to paying for tuition. In this section, I am going further to mention some situations and how does this situation demonstrate the responsibility that reflected from the dimensions of my personality, including conditions from communication, diversity awareness, decision-making and problem solving.
