Abstract
Nowadays, people spend much time in online communities to network with virtual friends and play role plays. They provide an advantage for people with special needs who cannot leave the house, because they benefit from the accessibility of the internet. Moreover, they help people who often move to stay in touch with their friends. Nevertheless, spending too much time in online communities leads to drawbacks in the development of the user’s personality. More energy is dedicated to the virtual life than to real life and people lose track of their personalities while busy building online ones. Also, frequent users of online communities have difficulties beginning meaningful real life relationships. Virtual friendships are shallow due to the physical distance and the anonymity of the internet and it is common to have more friends than you are able to care for. Therefore, it is more rewarding to invest into physical relationships.

Virtual reality over the past decade has developed into an important component in multiple human lives. The invention and progression of virtual reality has greatly impacted the world by allowing us to experience entertainment in different ways. In their article “Why Place Matters” Wilfred M. McClay and Ted V. McAllister argue the risk of virtual reality taking over the central importance of “places”. According to them, our use of the internet is disconnecting us from the real world and our senses for valuing real life experiences are slowly fading away. Although their argument is concerning, the authors overlook certain factors as to why people spend so much time online such as social, emotional, environmental and physical factors. We live in a world where society does not treat people who are or appear different in a friendly way. Rather, the HomeNet results suggest that using the Internet in itself caused the declines in social well-being” (p. 135). The conclusion of the studies provides supporting evidence that the internet will cause depression and loneliness, since depressed individuals were not already drawn to the internet. The isolation that comes with internet usage can too add to the less likelihood of face-to-face interaction. The more one is isolated the less contact of friends and family. With the entry of technology, humankind built up the capacity to communicate around the world. However, there were many debates whether technology changed the way of socializing with people. Despite the fact that technology has its positive sides, it ought to be found in a negative light. As technology made people's lives easier, they lost their social skills. The problem is that Nowadays' generation is failing to understand the epidemic of communicating via internet and its side effects.
Mediated communication, a form of communication carried out by the use of technology, is becoming increasingly popular in today’s society. Used carefully and in the right way, it can provide improvements in our daily lives, whether it be for work or downtime. According to Alder, Rolls, and Proctor II, some benefits include creating a “glocalized” world, meaning connecting people from all over the world, encouraging offline interactions, and minimizing the perception of differences (Alder, Rolls, & Proctor II, 2015, pp. 13-15). However, there are also cons to using this form of communication such as there being no body language to decipher how the person feels or what they are communicating, disinhibition, and lack of true privacy (Alder, Rolls, & Proctor II, 2015, pp. 15-16). What you put on the internet will stay there forever and the documentary Facebook Follies shows us just that.
Sadly, people are becoming socially awkward as “social media behavior involves communicating with many remote persons even when one may be physically alone,” making it incapable of having a true physical friendship (Vatel 2). For some, communication does not exist without the shield of a laptop computer and an internet connection. To truly know someone is not the brief exchange of a few instant messages that may or may not be truthful or sincere. Today, engaging in a social outing, coming together for a casual gathering or even a simple brunch to get to know one another has become taboo. People in today’s world rely too heavily on the convenience of new communication technologies including emails, texting, and social media. Whilst the importance of these mediums and the way to which they have transformed modern communication cannot be denied, the importance of face-to-face communication and the benefits it provides must not be negated. Communication is a key element of human nature and ‘we communicate for many many reasons, these can be simplified down to three; to persuade, to inform, and to express. Over the last century, information technology, such as the Internet, has brought our society forward and helps us get through life more efficiently and conveniently. In addition, it helps making global communication easier and faster as compared to hand-written mails that may take days if not weeks to reach its intended recipient. However, with such luxury and convenience, there is a debate whether the way we currently interact with fellow human beings with the help of technology is good or bad to our personal relationships. The Internet has increased the amount of communication globally, yet ironically the very technology that helps us increase our communication hinders our ability to socialize effectively in real life and create a healthy interpersonal relationship.

Communicating with technology has changed in many different ways. We usually “get in touch” with people through technology rather than speaking with them face to face. The most popular way people discuss things, with another individual, is through our phones. Phones have been around way before I was born in 1996, but throughout the years, they have developed a phone called a “smart phone”. The smart phone has all kinds of new things that we can use to socialize with our peers. On these new phones, we can connect with our friends or family on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Technology has also developed Skype, a place you can talk with people on the computer with instant voice and video for hours. The new communication changes have changed drastically from the new advances made in technology through our smart phones, social networking sites, and Skype.
