Since the beginning of time there have been people who are leaders and there are those that choose to be followers. As an effective leader, one must possess certain traits and skills that include knowing how to motivate others to accomplish a task. This assignment will discuss the role of a supervisor in the multicultural society of today and the three traits needed to become an effective manager. This assignment will include the relationship between managers, supervisors, and employees and how these relationships assist in guiding organizations in achieving their maximum potential and the importance of finding the right employee to meet those goals.
In today’s business world, supervisors must have a unique skill set that includes being able to communicate well with others, having the ability to effectively coach others, understanding the dynamics of working through others, and possessing performance management skills that allows them to handle changes in a positive manner.
The role of a supervisor is similar to the role of a mother or father. Just as a mother or father nurtures their child to become the best that they can be, a supervisor does the same with his/her employees. A supervisor who is committed to setting their employees up for success is essentially a recruiter, trainer, planner, motivator, coach, and a leader for others to follow (Cassidy & Kreitner, 2010, p. 9). While there are numerous traits that a supervisor should possess, there are three imperative traits that stand out above the rest in my opinion. These traits are (1) emotional intelligence, (2) being honest and ethical, and (3) having the ability to accept diversity.

As now it can be concluded that to make a supervision session effective it is essential to have a deep understanding of these facts and theories. Characteristics of both supervisor and supervisee are equally important. As supervisors must know their roles and responsibilities at the same time, supervisee should have interest towards reflective practice. There are many other traits that earmark a good supervisor; for instance setting a “good example,” being efficient, thorough, and dedicated. “Flexibility” is also important. It is necessary to provide employees with “training and feedback.” A good supervisor is “consistent and fair.” A good supervisor also provides his staff with “recognition for a job well done” (Merit, 1998, p.1).
There are numerous leadership skills leaders utilize within a global organization to integrate inclusion. To create an inclusive organization the leader must consider methods that will influence employees that incorporates a diverse cultural organization. Per Bourke and Dillon (2016), inclusive leadership requires six C’s of success in a global organization. The Cs includes; commitment, curiosity, courage, cognizance, Collaboration and cultural intelligence. Commitment encompasses the leader is driven by fairness. The leader’s beliefs and values motivates them to put energy and time into change the work environment. The leader leads with experiences on how to change the organization into one that is inclusive due to the diverse population of employees. Curiosity provides the leader with determination to constantly strive to learn new things. Leaders that are filled with curiosity have an open-mind, a hunger for knowledge, and a passion for uncovering distinctive concepts (Bourke, 2016). Leadership, no doubt, is one the key aspects of creating a culture and climate that extracts the best performance from employees. It is a significant contributor to long term sustained employee engagement and satisfaction. It is a key building block to creating a high performing organization. When a trained and successful leader from one culture attempts to use these same skill sets and experience, which made them successful, on employees of different cultures or cultural backgrounds and fails; is he now a bad leader? If the leader does not take into account the diversity at hand and understand the differences in perception then he will not be able to successfully influence his employees. The Systematic Developmental Supervision (SDS) model is a model based on the relationship between a supervisor and a supervisee that allows the supervisor to help promote the professional growth of a supervisee through “self-awareness and skills acquisition” (Carlson & Lambie, 2012, abstract). Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
The education requirements in Florida are, from time to time, the board will need the physical therapist to prove their professional capability, in order for them to renew their license. Therefore every 2 years they have to complete 24 hours of continuing education. The board can only accept courses taken from a college or university, but they can make exception if there is an emergency. In Arizona there are 3 different sections of activities that can be completed in order to renew your license. The choices are to complete 20 hours every 2 years, complete the minimum amount of 10 contact hours, and you can combine two of the options.
Personal Philosophy of Supervision Beliefs and Philosophy School administrators are important in setting the path for a successful school (Glickman, et al., 2014). The principals could play a dynamic leadership depending on how they exercise their beliefs of the organizational and social environment (McNair, 2011). The principals are the primary facilitators for developing the foundations in learning that will last, to manage the student’s performance at schools, and seeking the improvement at school that will cause great impacts in school‘s education (Gordon,1989). In the recent years in the U.S., education has change in a more cultural diversity population, it is imperative that school supervisors, are trained to encounter this cultural issues, but also assisting others with the opportunities to develop appropriate abilities to deal with different cultures (Glickman, et al., 2014). Even though this increasing awareness of the multicultural issues, many supervisors are not being trained how to deal with this issues in the daily practice.
The aim of this assignment is to analyze the relevant concepts, theories and models about leadership and describe one person who could be identified as leader and analyze how effective this person’s leadership is and why it is effective. Defining what is leadership comes first, second will provide an overview about my organization and the importance of leadership. Moving forward will address the different type of leaders and the difference between management and leadership. We will address as well, the theories of effective leadership; and last but not least, identify our leader and conclude a summary of this assignment.
Leadership; “a process in which an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (DuBrin, 2013 p. 3), is needed at all levels in an organisation and can be practiced by other roles who are not specifically assigned to a leadership role (DuBrin, 2013 p. 3). The role of a leader and the role of a manager are two very distinctive and dissimilar roles. The role of a leader is the ability to inspire, motivate and stimulate others to achieve tasks and activities whereas, a managers role is the ability to supervise and direct the effort and activities of subordinates to achieve organisational goals (Long, 2007 p.4). Although some managers can be thought to have leadership qualities, not all managers are perceived as leaders (Eidson, 2011, p.6). Leadership influences relationships between leaders and followers in a hope to obtain accomplishments of a common task or shared purpose. This component expresses the importance of leadership in organizations and the imperativeness of management adopting it. The following critique; analyses the verity that not all mangers are leaders, the difference between superior and dire leaders, the role differences of leaders and managers and the importance of managers adopting leadership skills, by evaluating and applying reference to theoretical concepts.
The Gung Ho theory can certainly translate to education. The spirit of the squirrel would mean that teachers understand that educating people is important, and has a direct effect on them. The shared goal would be to have all students graduate prepared for life after school. The way of the beaver would involve staff, students and parents having input into how the school works towards achieving that shared goal. All of the above groups will work harder if they feel that they are all part of the process of improving the school. Lastly, the item that seems to happen least in education is the gift of the goose. Teachers are usually left feeling underappreciated both by the public and by their supervisors. The largest complaint from teachers is their monetary compensation. Teachers feel as if they are underpaid and therefore are not always enthusiastic about their work. Within a school, supervisors can do their part to make teachers feel appreciated by giving true active and passive congratulations. These congratulations can be verbal, written, or non-verbal, and would have a major impact on making a teacher feel as if they are doing right work the right way.
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power.
