When someone hears the word Vietnam, usually it is in regard to the Vietnam War. Despite what most westerners think, Vietnam isn’t all about the Vietnam war. There is a long history starting thousands and thousands of years ago. In the past hundred years Vietnam has significantly developed. Vietnam is run by a communist government, and following the lead of some asian countries, they have begun to transition their economy to capitalism. In recent years, tourism has increased and this has sped up Vietnam’s development. Vietnam was isolated in the years following the Vietnam war, but in the past few years, they have began to make relations with other countries. Overall, Vietnam has improved their democratization, development and interconnectedness.
As of right now, Vietnam’s official name is the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The Communist Party of Vietnam is the founding and ruling party. This quote, from the 2013 Constitution of Vietnam displays the control the communist party has, “The Communist Party of Vietnam... is the leading force of the State and society.” They have all of the power. This party has control over the centralized government, military, and media. Before 1945, Vietnam was still a colony. After World War II, France wanted to keep its Indochina colonies, Vietnam was included in this category. SImilar to most colonies after World War II, the Vietnamese wanted their independence from France. When France attempted to continue its control, they fought back. This was the First Indochina War. After that point, Vietnam was partitioned into North and South Vietnam, so that the opposing parties could organize campaigns before elections were held. Vietnam has come a long way from where they started. Recently, they have developed significantly. This quote from the 2012 Vietnam Development Report shows that, “Vietnam has come a long way in the last 15 years in promoting the public availability of economic data and information.” Their development is directly tied to their interconnectedness and progression in democratization. Because of Vietnam’s progression towards a more capitalistic economy, their country has developed. Once Vietnam created and repaired relations with other countries, foreign countries began to invest in Vietnam’s economy which kick started development. Vietnam is always going to be associated with the Vietnam War, but hopefully they will make a new name for themselves through development, democratization and interconnectedness.
