In today 's society we see a lot of rivalries; for example, Coke vs Pepsi, PC vs Mac, and most recently Android vs. Apple. Around the turn of the 19th century, there was a similar rivalry that had everyone in shock; this rivalry was known as the AC DC Current War. This war was between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla were the two most influential minds during the 1800s. Edison, the Wizard of Menlo Park, worked hard his whole life to reach great achievement of professional recognition in science. Tesla, the Master of Lightning, had an intellectual mind and contributed to an electronic development that changed American history. Most people have heard of Thomas Edison; in contrast, Tesla is a little more obscure. …show more content…

Tesla came from a very strict family. When Tesla was growing up, he only had two choices in life, which was to become an Orthodox priest or joining the army. He dreamed of being a famous inventor. His father, being an Orthodox priest, tried persuading young Tesla to join his religious path, but Tesla lacked interest and instead continued his passion in science. Tesla became very ill, based on Wisdom-magazine.com, the journalist, Marguerite dar Boggia, stated in the article Nikola Tesla’s Childhood, “When he was ill, he told his father that if he allowed him to become an engineer, he would get well. His father readily consented and sent him to the best schools and universities”. After this encounter, Tesla studied at the Realschule, Karlstadt in 1873, the Polytechnic Institute in Graz, Austria and the University of Prague. Mentioned by PBS.org, “Tesla was hired by electric power companies in Strasbourg and Paris to improve their DC generation facilities. In Germany and France, he attempted to interest investors in his concept of an AC motor but had no success. It was clear that in order to realize his idea, he would have to meet the greatest electrical engineer in the world—Thomas Alva Edison”(Coming to America,Tesla Life and Legacy). Being fascinated by Thomas Edison, he went to America in search to work with him due to his success of electrical engineering. Tesla being promised fifty thousand dollars, he went on to improve on Edison’s DC, direct current, motor. His direct current motor was a machine which created voltage going only in one direction; nevertheless, the exact quantity of volts the motor produces is how much is going to be sent through the current, if too much current is sent it will cause an explosion.
