In “Terrorists R’ Us” (Adbusters, August 2004) Ziauddin Sardar concludes that ordinary people are also terrorists. He reasons firstly that, ordinary people cause as much destruction through environmental and cultural systems as those caused by the terrorists, sometimes even worse. He also reasons that inequalities, exploitation and imperialism have become a part and parcel of our policies and system; traits that are typical to terrorists. Thus, he believes that in order to have a terrorism-free future, we must first reform and correct ourselves rather than the terrorists. Although these reasons may seem convincing, Sardar has attempted to establish a false causal connection between the actions of the ordinary people and the prevailing problems being faced. In fact, ordinary people are not really terrorists as the author claims in his article.

The Oxford Dictionary defines terrorist as a person who uses violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims (Oxford English minidictionary, 2006, p. 576). Sardar points out that terrorists often have a legitimate grievance for their actions. Comparing this with the ordinary people, he argues that people are motivated by avarice and dominance in our right to control the World; however, this is a hasty generalization. Not all people are greedy and selfish; there exist thousands of people who are selfless, caring and good natured. Further, Sardar compares and contrasts the destruction caused by the terrorists and by the ordinary people. While it is true that ordinary people do cause some destruction, Sardar has merely given distorted statements about the destruction caused by ordinary people without giving any explanation about it.
