Terrorism is defined as the use of violent acts to frighten people in an area to achieve a political goal. Although this is true there is so much more at stake when civilians experience an attack. First, it’s not just the civilians of that city; aftershock of a Terrorist attack affects the country as a whole. Terrorist strikes on a first world country can create global concerns, not solely on a political level; terrorism damages an attacked country on a larger scale.

This creates negative stereotypes for example, after the 9/11 attacks many American citizens perception changed on Muslims and the Middle Eastern race, American citizen marginalized a radical terrorist group to an ethnicity of people. Same results are seen during the war between the Israelites versus the Palestinians a survey was made by Dov Waxman discovering, “39 percent of Israeli Jewish respondents perceived Palestinians as violent in a 1997 survey, by the end of 2000 after the onset of the second Intifada, this figure had risen to 68 percent of Israeli Jews”(77). This proves terrorism creates a rise in ethnocentrism and xenophobia damaging the social aspect of an attacked country. Ethnocentrism is the belief that one person thinks that they’re superior to another race because of heritage, this is increased by terrorism because citizens of the terrorized country blame one group’s actions on a whole race or religion this correlates with Xenophobia; the extreme hatred of another race of people. So what kind of effects does terrorism have over the mind of a citizen of an attacked country? A month after the events of 9/11 Matthew G. Whalley and, Chris R. Brewin took a general population study on stress levels in the region of the original incident and throughout the United States, the study showed that a rise in stress levels stretching far past the region of impact.
Also Fred Charatan explains in his article after 9/11 there was a 22% rise in self infliction cases throughout the United States this includes Substance abuse, self harm, suicide and many other cases. Civilians who lost someone in such tragic events have difficulty handling the tragedy, civilians who witnessed the events could be diagnosed with PTSD which is usually diagnosed to soldiers in combat can be found in terrorism witnesses, also shown in Fred’s article. Overall occurrences like this make citizens feel uneasy and put the idea that they are not safe even behind their countries
