In high school, I began to ask teachers for writing prompts prior to reading the book, so I could have a longer time to think about my approach to the essay. This engaged me in the book far more, I was always thinking of way I could improve my future essay topic. Some teachers let me do this, while others didn’t like the sound of it. I quickly grew out of this process when I began to engage myself more in the reading. I evaluated the piece as I read and mentally engaged myself with the quotes important to the themes present in the novel. This process helped me become an engaged learner and reader, but my writing process problem still wasn’t wholly solved; I wasn’t moving as fast as I should be in my mind.
To solve this, I began using a new, and now vital, part in my writing process, the outline. I regarded outlines as childish before, but it wasn’t until I started an essay with it that I understood its effectiveness. ... each and every day in a professional setting. This knowledge continues to inspire me to improve my writing in any way I can, because I know that it isn’t just a small, pointless task, but something that I use every day.
Everyone that improves their writing seems like a generally more intelligent person; why is that? Is it because our main form of communication with people we don’t interact face-to-face with is writing? I would argue so, and any improvement that one can make on their writing will end up having a much larger impact on their lives than they believe. Great writing is something that people will tell others about, but it will most definitely positively impact someone’s perception of you. Even when I have no motivation to write or revise, I think about the possibility of impressing people without them even knowing, and immediately regain all my motivation.
