Every essay begins with a blank stare into space, an exasperated sigh, and the inevitable thought: what am I going write about? Or at least that is how they used to begin, and this process may have continued for hours, or even days, with each time I sat down determined to write nothing would make it on the paper. This became a major roadblock in my writing process, because every essay took an unreasonable amount of time thinking about how to approach this topic, typing sentences out and the deleting them. Finally, an idea would come and I would begin to write, the words would finally spill out onto the paper. The terrible experience writing forced me to figure out a new way to brainstorm my essay weeks before the essay was assigned.
In high school, I began to ask teachers for writing prompts prior to reading the book, so I could have a longer time to think about my approach to the essay. This engaged me in the book far more, I was always thinking of way I could improve my future essay topic. Some teachers let me do this, while others didn’t like the sound of it. I quickly grew out of this process when I began to engage myself more in the reading. I evaluated the piece as I read and mentally engaged myself with the quotes important to the themes present in the novel. This process helped me become an engaged learner and reader, but my writing process problem still wasn’t wholly solved; I wasn’t moving as fast as I should be in my mind.
To solve this, I began using a new, and now vital, part in my writing process, the outline. I regarded outlines as childish before, but it wasn’t until I started an essay with it that I understood its effectiveness. I realized why it was such a basic and important piece in the writing process throug...

... each and every day in a professional setting. This knowledge continues to inspire me to improve my writing in any way I can, because I know that it isn’t just a small, pointless task, but something that I use every day.
Everyone that improves their writing seems like a generally more intelligent person; why is that? Is it because our main form of communication with people we don’t interact face-to-face with is writing? I would argue so, and any improvement that one can make on their writing will end up having a much larger impact on their lives than they believe. Great writing is something that people will tell others about, but it will most definitely positively impact someone’s perception of you. Even when I have no motivation to write or revise, I think about the possibility of impressing people without them even knowing, and immediately regain all my motivation.

The Process of Writing Essay

- As I sit here staring at the blank screen, thoughts race through my mind as I contemplate what lies ahead. Is my topic clear. Is it appropriate. What is it that I want to say. Finally the fear sets in, what lie ahead is a minefield of self-doubt and criticism, one misstep could lead to a personal catastrophe. I take each step with caution, slowly putting my thoughts on paper, exposing myself to scrutiny. The answers do not present themselves with the concrete certainty of mathematics and science, they are subjective and open to interpretation....   [tags: Obstacles, Uncertainty]

If You Are Alive, Then You Are Surrounded by Math Essay

- “Don’t Stare at a Blank Screen” is an activity that encourages the brainstorming of all ideas—regardless of whether or not they are good. The authors of The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking argue that this is a worthwhile activity because they believe that bad ideas are better than no ideas at all. A student organization that I am a part of has taken a negative turn this year and I decided to use this activity to brainstorm ways to fix the organization so that it does not run itself into the ground....   [tags: Don't Stare at a Blank Screen]

Essay on Human Nature And The Blank Slate

- Hsun Tzu, Chinese philosopher, argued Man’s nature is evil; goodness is the result of conscious activity. As Tzu writes, “Man is born with the desires of the eyes and ears, with a fondness for beautiful sights and sounds”(100-101). Through life though, one is able to decide what path to take; continue to be evil or become a better person. In a Ted Talk, Stephen Pinker discussed ‘Human Nature and the Blank Slate.’ Pinker made several strong reasons why one should doubt “Blank Slate”: one being children and another being people being born with certain instincts....   [tags: Human, Good and evil, The Blank Slate, Religion]

Writing Processes And Their Past Experiences With Writing Essay

- It was interesting to read everyone’s theories about writing and hear both similar and diverse insights about people’s writing processes and their past experiences with writing. It helped me reflect on things more too. A few people talked about not really knowing where to begin when asked, “What is your theory of writing?” For example, Renee said, “What is my theory of writing?” To be honest I’m not sure if I have one, or really fully understand what it means exactly. I get extremely frustrated trying to write a paper when I don’t exactly know what I’m supposed to write” I also wasn’t sure what a “theory of writing” was exactly when I sat down to work on this assignment....   [tags: Writing, Writing process, A Great Way to Care]

Analysis of Dickinson’s Pain has an Element of Blank Essay

- Analysis of Dickinson’s Pain has an Element of Blank    Although cryptic in language and structure, Dickinson gives her work an instinctually vivid sense of emotion.  Her examination of the feeling of pain focuses in on only a few of the subtler nuances of pain that are integral parts of the experience.  She draws in on an "Element of Blank" that she introduces in her opening line.  In exploring pain, she proposes that this "blankness" is a self-propagating force that is subject to the dynamic forces of time, history and perception, but only to an extent....   [tags: Element Blank]

Essay on My Writing Experience Of Writing

- Looking back on my writing experiences, writing was never very appealing to me until I got into the 5th grade. Not only did I not care much for reading and writing, school in general just didn’t seem to be something I was passionate about. After walking into my 5th grade class room something stood out about this teacher that I just couldn’t exactly put my finger on. Right away I felt that I was going to get along with her because of the enthusiasm she would bring to school every day and how she showed a passion for her work without having to explain it....   [tags: Writing, Essay, Teacher, Writer]

The At The Blank Laptop Screen Before Me Essay

- Gazing at the blank laptop screen before me, I could practically feel the fibers of the muscles within my eyes strain to maintain focus. The late night creaks and thuds of the house settling echoed loudly; you could virtually feel the darkness of the other rooms looming just outside the windows and doorways that adjoined my workroom. I glanced, again at the time in the bottom corner of the screen. 11:23 PM. Almost another day done. After a particularly long and taxing Monday at the elementary school within which I worked as a special education paraeducator, I now sat perched before my computer, my fingers tentatively poised over the keys in another pause in the writing flow, which was one of...   [tags: Writing, Communication, Literacy, Writing system]
