We were young and in love. It was supposed to be that all American story that ended in happily ever after. Unfortunately, it turned out to be an American story of other sort; a story of frustration, personal intrusion, and despair all tightly woven together by a single managerial decision. A decision that proves the managerial decision-making process can forever alter the course of a person’s life.

At the pure and young age of 16, love was found in Lance. Recently turned 17, Lance was removed from my side as a host at a local restaurant. As a 16 year olds we were only allowed work at the restaurant as hosts. Lance could not wait until his 17th birthday when he would be moved into a serving position. The regulars from a local church knew us and were always quick to give advice. Do not get married to soon they would say. Be sure to go to college was a common comment. Do not have children too soon was frequent as well, but there was no chance of that. Lance and I were both virgins. That much they did not know, but Lance and I did. To us, no one else really needed to know.

Shortly after Lance started serving, the restaurant was picketed with calls to boycott the local establishment. The signs read the most horrid things. “Does this restaurant employ a statutory rapist?” “To defile a child a child is an atrocity against God Himself.” The picketing came as a shock to everyone and to be the one at the center of it all was terrifying. With such harsh words against the restaurant, business quickly began to ebb. One fateful day the general manager walked out front with a letter in his hand and spoke with the picketers who were once regulars. In the case of a franchise where managers have other authorities they must answer to, protecting the business carries even more weight over doing the right, or moral and ethical thing when the opportunity presents itself.

Today, under tougher the economical challenges being felt across the nation, the business will be sought to be protected over losing revenues in the moral defense of a single employee. It is getting increasingly difficult for businesses to survive. A moral and ethical dilemma that detrimentally affects revenue, may serve as the factor that forces a fragile business to close its doors permanently. Sending one person into the unemployment line may be thought of as being better than sending 30.
