Around the age of forty eight, Hugues de Payens was believed to have been the first member and Grand master of the Templar Knights. His goals for the order were to protect pilgrimage to the holy land and stop the attackers. Payens also wanted the knights to take an oath of poverty and not get overwhelmed by riches. At the time Hugues de Payens created one of the world’s greatest orders in history (Templarhistory.com » Blog Archive » Hugues de Payens – The First Grand Master). When the order was originally formed they were known as the Poor Knights of the Temple of King Solomon. The Knights Templar organization began in 1119 and was founded by nine knights. The organization began after 700 Christian pilgrims, whom were on the path to the Jordan River, were attacked by Saracens, the Muslim inhabitants of the deserts near Syria. Out of the 700, 300 were killed. After this massacre, two French noblemen Hugues de Payen and Godfrey de St Omer, were allowed an audience with Baldwin II, whom was the king of Jerusalem at the time, who gave them permission to start their order as a small monastic brotherhoo...

The Medieval Ages were a time of chaos and war as rulers struggled to maintain a centralized power. The historical fiction novel Blood Red Horse by K. M. Grant takes place in Medieval England at first in 1185, and then moves toward the holy city of Jerusalem until 1193. It follows the journey of Sir Thomas’s sons, Gavin and William, and their inseparable bond of the invisible horse, Hosanna, as they leave their homeland of Heartslove to take part in the third crusade. The novel thoroughly explains their visits to the local Abbey, experiences as Christians in battle, and their encounters with the Muslims as they fight for their religion to take back Jerusalem. K.M. Grant’s Blood Red Horse strongly and accurately describes the lives and knowledge of Monks living in a medieval Christian monastery, military armour and weapons, and the English crusader’s significant battles with Muslim leader, Saladin.

Knights were an essential group during the medieval time period because they provided protection to all people during times of war. Men who wanted to become a Knight lived a challenging life before they had stability and enough money to begin training. The job of a Knight needed to be taken very seriously because of the many tough training levels men were required to complete. Knights wore several layers of hard armor and carried advanced weapons to provide them with protection during a battle. To ensure all Knights lived up to the same standards, a code of conduct was enforced to keep everyone in their place. A Knight's job was quite difficult so much courage and perseverance was needed to perform the tasks
At the beginning of the feudal system most lords had knights to fight for them in times of war. At first, the lords would supply horses and armor for these men, but as the cost of these goods rose, the knights would simply receive land (Scher 1). This is the circumstance, the need to purchase their own armor, that made more and more knights to come from wealthy, noble backgrounds and ultimately raise them above common people.
Four armies of Crusaders were formed from troops of different Western European regions led by Raymond of Saint-Gilles, Godfrey of Bouillon, Hugh of Vermandois and Bohemond of Taranto with his nephew, Tancred. Less than a year after Pope Urban II’s call, these groups departed for Byzantium in August 1096. A less organised band of knights known as the People’s Crusade left before the others under the command of a popular preacher known as Peter the Hermit.
The medieval knights templar were a devout military religious order that combined the roles of knight and monk in a way the medieval world has never seen before. Originally, they were known as the poor knights of Christ and the temple of Solomon or the knights Templar. St. Bernard regarded them as “new species of knighthood”. To him they were a unique combination of knight and monk. They were a fierce military unit devoted to christ and everything that christ stands for (wikipedia).
The Knights Templars were a holy organization that made their purpose to safely guide anyone who wished to travel to Jerusalem (the Holy Land) safely for a fee. They also vowed to protect Jerusalem and any other land that was holy to them and their faith. After the First Crusade, the Knights Templar’s purpose became clear when the road to Jerusalem was no longer safe, due to the frequent robberies that the pilgrims encountered on their way to the Holy Land. The Knights templar were known for their control of most of the money in Europe, even though this was much later on in the organizations being, their incredible skill and determination in battle, and their tragic end to their organization, even though there are still some sects that practice their beliefs today.

Jacques had been pining for the position since the year before when he put himself up as an alternative choice to the current Grand Master and called for a reformation.
