Edgar Allan Poe is one of the greatest authors of all time, and many critics and readers consider him a Horror genre type writer. Many of Poe’s stories could be considered some of the best of the horror genre, but his famous short story The Tell Tale Heart could be considered the best of his writing in horror. The Tell Tale Heart was first published in 1843, and was published in James Russell Lowell’s The Pioneer in January. Throughout Poe’s short story he showed examples of iconography and how they showed throughout the story. In the story an example of iconography would be when the narrator killed the old man that he was taking care of, although he had done nothing to the narrator. Another prime example would be the old man’s “Evil Eye” (Poe) as described by the narrator in Poe’s story. The evil eye is what drove the narrator mad and is what led him to kill the old man at the end of the novel. Throughout most horror genre stories the person that commits the crime is usually mentally unstable and spends their time throughout the story fighting with their unstable mind. The setting of stories have a big part in what type of story that the story is. In the Tell Tale Heart, the main setting of the short story was set in the old man’s room, later during the nights around midnight. The main points of horror stories always happen later during the nights, such as midnight being when the monster comes out to haunt others. Poe through the narrator, violates the sanctity of a bedroom, because readers believe that a bedroom is supposed to peaceful place where they can rest without fear. The scene when the old man realizes that someone or something in his room is a prime example of the suspense caused by Poe breaking the safety of a bedroom. The bedroom is described as a dark place with no light so neither the narrator or the old man could see anything in the room, which is why the narrator uses a lantern throughout the story. Imagine being a madman, and you hate this old guys eye. This is the issue that the main character faces in the Tell-Tale Heart. In the story, the main character wants the old man dead, However, he watches the old man for a couple days while he sleeps. The previous week before Poe killed the man he was nice. The problem is that the old man knows something is watching and he can't find the right time to kill him. He then decides to go in the room, take the bed mattress and smuggle him to death. Suspenses are within fear of the old man and what might happen. It is creepy when Poe just stares at the old man while he sleeps.
