Recommended: The Evolution of Television

Television is a very important part of today’s society. Without the invention of television, the world would be without many wonders, such as Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Here Comes Honey BooBoo, and Jersey Shore. More importantly, daily news, breaking updates, mass information, and quality programming would unaccessible to thousands, if not millions, of people. Television has changed the way information is spread and changed the way the world experiences entertainment. Although much has changed throughout the history of the television, the main point has stayed the same. Whether a person’s first experience with a TV was a small black and white box with very few channels or an LCD or Plasma flat screen with thousands of channels, it has impacted the lives of millions all over the developed world and especially in the United States. With all the advances and changes made to the original television design, it is obvious that the first one had enough of a societal and technological impact to last for a long time. It can be used to spread ideas and alert the viewers of news from a far away place. It has the power to introduce ideas into the minds of the people and, “It elects presidents. It wins wars. It is both a mirror and an engine of our culture,” (Baker 141). It has changed how things are done in this country. Before televisions news would be spread through word of mouth and newspapers. After the advent of television, it was much easier for people to access news of a president election or what is going on in a war halfway around the world. In 1947, the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), and the Du Mont Network were the four main television networks that ran stations with regular programming taking place. (Television, 2003) While regular television programming was a new innovation, the television itself had been commercially available for over twenty years prior to the 50s. It was conceived by many worldly innovators and went through several testing stages before it was finally completed in the late twenties. The three main innovators were Niplow - who first developed a rotating disk with small holes arranged in a spiral pattern in 1884, Zworykin - who developed the Iconoscope which could scan pictures and break them into electronic signals (a primitive form of the Cathode Ray Tube) in 1923, and lastly Fansworth - who demonstrated for the first time that it was possible to transmit an electrical image in 1927. (Rollo, 2011) However, one of the many reasons why this medium was successful in the 50s was due to the fact that it became more accessible to the public. Television sets were more affordable to middle class citizens which created further interest in the new technology.
