Over the past 200 years, the United States of America has experienced many different types of presidents. Some were great presidents, and others were not so great. It is difficult to take on the role of presidency, since you have an entire country depending on you even when you sleep. Teddy Roosevelt took on this role as presidency in an extraordinary fashion. He was certainly one of the utmost presidents of the early 20th century, and is often thought to be one of the greatest presidents in United States history. Through Roosevelt’s amazingly energetic personality and astonishing courage pushed America through the early 20th century, as well as created many much-needed reforms.
Roosevelt was born in New York City on October 27, 1858, as the second of four children of Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. His father was a New York City philanthropist, merchant, and partner in the glass-importing firm. His uncle was a leading Confederate admiral in the Civil War. Roosevelt suffered from many illnesses, which required him to sit up or slouch over in a chair to fall asleep. He became very interested in animals at a young age, and he actually wanted to pursue zoology as a career. He put together an animal museum, which sheltered various types of animals he had caught. He traveled to many different places across the world, including Egypt, the Holy Land, and Germany.
In 1876 he started attending Harvard College, where he excelled in science, philosophy, and rhetoric courses, but did poorly in classical languages. Since he was already highly interested in animals, he did well in biology. Roosevelt was a very educated man and learned much more since he had a photographic memory. During school, he acquired a life-long habit of devouring books, memorizing every detail. He could multitask in extraordinary fashion, dictating letters to one secretary and memoranda to another, while browsing through a book.
President William McKinley appointed Roosevelt as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1897. His friend, Congressman Henry Cabot Lodge, urged Roosevelt to take the position. In 1898 he resigned from his position as Assistant Secretary of First U.S. of the Navy, and with the help of U.S. Army Colonel Leonard Wood, put together National Cavalry out of a diverse crew that ranged from cowboys from the Western territories to Ivy League chums from New York.
Three years later in 1884, both Theodore’s mom and his first wife (Alice Hathaway Lee) died on the same day. Theodore was so depressed about his loved one’s death that he decided to leave politics and spend two years on a cattle ranch. Five years later, Roosevelt became active in politics again and fought against corruption by becoming a member of the U.S. Civil Service Commission through 1889-1895. After 1895, Theodore got appointed as the assistant secretary of the navy by William McKinley. Theodore demanded a bigger navy because he was getting nervous about a war with Spain. War with Spain was declared in 1898, and Theodore consequently made the Rough Riders.
Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most influential people in the early 20th century. His leadership style, his reforms, and his personality shaped an America that was rapidly becoming a world power. Theodore Roosevelt is admirably remembered for his energetic persona, his range of interests and achievements, his leadership of the Progressive Movement, his model of masculinity and his “cowboy” image (). He was a leader of the Republican Party and founder of the short-lived Progressive Party of 1912 (). In 1901 Vice President Theodore Roosevelt took over as President after William McKinley was assassinated. The country had many opportunities ahead but was in need of some changes that the American people were all too ready for. Roosevelt was brought up in a well to do family and had was Harvard educated. But he was known to be a down to earth man that understood the needs of the people. His first priority as president was to give the people a “square deal” which encompassed his plan for the era. He wanted to reduce control the big businesses had over the U.S. economy and the workers, create more protection for the consumer, and create a plan to conserve our natural resources.

The U.S. had annexed Hawaii in 1898 and Spanish-American War granted the U.S. control of the Philippines. It also led the U.S. to establish a protectorate over Cuba and grant territorial status for Puerto Rico. By taking on the Philippine Islands as an American colony after the Spanish-American War he had ended the U.S.'s isolation from international politics. Theodore Roosevelt believed that nations should pursue a strenuous life and do their part to maintain peace and order. It was also a belief that civilized nations had the duty of modernizing the barbarous ones. He also pushed for a bigger army and navy and by the end of his presidency he had built the U.S. Navy into a major force at sea.

The Panama Canal now saves ships thousands of miles, and National Parks inspire people to conserve the resources of this earth. His social justice policies keep businesses honest and force them to be fair. But like all humans he had flaws. One of his major weaknesses was he thought anyone who did not agree with him was un-American, and during World War One was suspicious of German Americans. While on state Legislature, he tried to fire a judge based on corruption because he reached a verdict Roosevelt did not agree with. But Roosevelt’s great intelligence, strength, and curiosity outweighed his flaws, and it is not surprise he is considered as one of America’s greatest presidents.

Not only did he help the country while in office, but he was also commander of the first US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment in the Spanish American War, the youngest member of the New York assemble at the age of 23, the president of New York City Police Board from 1895- 1897, assistant secretary of the Navy, governor of New York, and Vice President of the U.S. With this background, Roosevelt became the youngest President in the Nation's history at the age of forty-two. Theodore Roosevelt was one of our greatest presidents. He created the FDA and improved the position of the presidency greatly. Before Theodore came to be president, the position of presidency was slow and wasn’t very interesting so he made the executive branch more powerful by starting new reforms and a strong foreign policy.
