Introduction Is technology taking over? Technology is used almost every minute of everyday throughout the world. Technology is a very resourceful thing. Humans use technology from making toast, to forecasting the weather, to even creating the parts to an airplane that have to be within a one hundred thousandths of an inch. But technology is expanding so rapidly that people think it may be taking over. Throughout the expansion of technology, it has taken over people’s families, our society, and even some jobs.

Social media is a very popular form of technology in today’s day and age. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and countless other social networking sites are something that people cannot seem to live without. But it does not help the cause that people are always on the sites when they are at our fingertips. All the time on Facebook, someone is posting a status about them being upset, or having something wrong with them. It seems as though the Internet and social networking especially have pulled the empathy and caring right out of some people, if not everyone. People want others to see that they are successful and when they aren’t, so they can sympathy or praise. While the technology that our world has today is amazing and helps us through our everyday lives, it is hard to put it down. A sad part is, bullying has even come down to being done in the cyber world. Technology is taking over society so badly that it is difficult to walk anywhere without seeing most people glued to their cell phones or talking about what they posted that morning, or a picture they saw online. It is like there cannot be a world without social networking or technology. It just seems like a lot of situations now are impersonal. To begin with, users should set restrictions. Another tip people should preform is designating an “unplug” day. That means, the person or family pick one day that they are not allowed to use technology. That includes their phones, tablets, computers, and some people even include their T.V. An additional suggestion to keep technology from taking over is establishing restrictions. The restrictions could include not responding to text or email for a set amount of time, to even establishing time limits for how long you are on your device. The last tip is too keeping devices out of the bedroom. Not only does having a device in a bedroom keep the user up, but it can keep other up that are trying to sleep. “One family. One Room. Four Screens. Four realities.” When he made this point I automatically thought about my household and how the statement compared to my family. In my house we do not interact with each very often. We are either always on our phones, watching TV, or on the computer, which is not very good when you think about it. This is something we have gotten accustomed to doing. I strongly agree that electronics have their effects on families, so much that is to the point where small children have and can function iPads, iPhones and other devices. According to “PEW Research Centers” and the “Internet and American Life Project” research shows that “60 percent of American families with children own 2 or more computers”. Dr. Koepnick states how technology has changed the quality time shared by families. He also states if you go back 200 years, there were valid complaints about the future with technology devices but the main focus back then was reading books which kept everyone busy. Back in the day families seemed to be much more family orientated, they were reading books, outside engaging in activities, and doing typical family things. Now everybody can be found just dazed on their phone and looking at the television screen. In today’s society technology is everywhere, whether it be in a car, on a billboard, a laptop, or even on one’s phone. However, is all this technology a bad thing or is it truly a worldwide phenomenon. Even back during 1992, author Neil Postman wrote about how technology is both a blessing and a burden. Many people believe Postman’s views are arrogant or far-fetched, but there are also those who agree with him about the dangers of technology.
...helle Hackman, a sophomore in high school, realized that her friends, rather than engaging in a conversation, were “more inclined to text each other” (Huffington Post). Michelle also became aware that over forty percent of people were suffering from anxiety when they were separated from the phones. This clearly shows that we are connected to the technology that we use, but we are also suffering from the use of technology. We spend more than half of our entire day using some sort of technology, whether that is a computer, phone, television, or radio. Technology is becoming a prevalent part of our lives, and we cannot live without it. Technology has become our family, and part of us.
Would that be possible to stay away from our technology’s devices for just a day? The answer for this question will bring a lot of negative answers, and of course if we ask this question in a survey, “NO” will be the winner of this survey. Talking about the use of technology reminded me one of the sources from my annotated bibliography by Amy Petersen, who is the Theatre and Media Arts Department Chair and Associate Professor in the College of Fine Arts and Communications at Brigham Young University. In her article which she wrote about the overuse of tech in our daily life and its affects, she said “If you would have told me a few years ago that I would feel completely lost without a cell phone, I never would have believed you. Now my iPhone is almost always within reach. My children likely believe that my most important possession is my MacBook Air, which is usually open and on whenever I am in the house. (“Jensen” par. 3)” Yes technology, internet, and cell phone became our best friends, and most of us can’t live without them.
Technology has changed our world dramatically over the last several decades. Several generations before us did not have air conditioning, telephones, television much less internet. However, today we have access to all of this and more. Technological advances have not only made changes in how we communicate, but also in how everyday tasks are done. The New York Times explains how social media affects children’s behavior and academics, and how the concept of dating has been altered while Louis C. K. explains how the 21st century takes little things for granted and YouTube channel charstarlineTV shows how daily activities can no longer be done without the use of cellphones.
Most people acknowledge that the advancement of technology has negatively impacted our social interactions because it detaches us from what is happening around us, obstructs communication, and spreads the concept of hurting teens learning ability must be able to utilize technology while not allowing it to effect social interactions, particularly for those who are easily influenced during our young years. Our world must learn to embrace technology without allowing it to negatively impact the creation of functional adults in society.
Various electronics are frequently used to go on pointless websites, such as Twitter and Facebook, which ruin society’s social abilities. More and more people use social media on the internet as a communication source. This does not apply merely to kids and teens, but adults as well. Using these sorts of websites as a way of communicating causes many individuals’ social skills to decrease. A plethora of children and teens would rather stay inside and interact with their friends through the internet than go hang out with them. Before technology people were not afraid to go up to a random person and talk to them. Now many friendships form through the internet and these friendships are not genuine. When these “friends” meet in person, they find nothing to talk about. For example, I remember after watching Perks of being a Wallflower, a movie taking place in the early nineties, my friends and I discussed how all the characters communicated in person and during hanging out they played games and talked. Social media has changed the way people communicate with each other and in turn, has affected our ability to empathize in both negative and positive ways. One of the most harmful consequences is the rise of cyber-bullying. Another negative issue has been the trend of trolling in comments sections of websites, chat rooms, and other online venues of communication. In spite of this, there have been constructive consequences due to social media such as the ability for family and friends to keep in touch on a regular basis. Because of social media, many people are finding support and resources to help them when they fall on hard times or experience tragedies like death and illness. Overall, social media is an exciting new world that changes as it grows and it will be up to society to utilize it for good.
The development of technology has led up to different ways of social interaction with one another. The launch of the computer was a huge impact in American history. It wasn’t only the computer that launched but also the Internet. Which brought different ways that people could interact with one another though Email and social networks (Lutfala). Some of the more popular social networks used are twitter and Facebook. People may become addicted to tweeting and posting up a tweet or status, this may become a priority to some people. Online, children and teenagers can have hundreds of “friends” without having to leave their home or open their mouths. Although is may seem easier for people to send a quick text, email or instant message it destroys the meaning of being able to interact with our friends and family and actually get to see each other face to face.
Every day we meet a lot of people have seen their behavior, listen to what they say, think about them, try to understand them. We feel that we not only see what color eyes and hair of a person, tall or not, thin or full, but also sad to him or fun, smart or stupid it, solid or not and so on. Over the past decade, social media has seen growth to the point where it is reflects in our daily lives and even the lives of those who choose not to use it. Anywhere we go online, there are always buttons to click so that you can share something on Facebook or pin it to your Pinterest account.
The opinions of many people vary on technology and the effects it has on today’s society. Some say that it’s more beneficial than anything, others completely disagree, and some have mixed emotions. Would you rather read out of a book, or play online learning games with a possible risk of eye problems? It’s about taking matters into your own hands. 71% of people believe technology has improved their lives. 76% of people completely disagree by saying that technology creates a lazy society and that is distracting and corrupting. Daily life with technology is also another huge issue in society. According to a survey taken in January 2013, people feel their work productivity has dropped 8% in the last year. They also felt that their relationships with their family at home dropped 4% in the past year. The opinions vary, but they are needed to show how technology is affecting different people.
According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for, on average, about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not yet realized how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems. First and foremost, health problems due to the increase in technology usage is becoming a bigger issue than one might think.
There is no doubt that the accomplishments made through technology are astonishing. Technology has made amazing impacts on everything from science in space to medical science to the devices we use every day that make our lives easier. People are living longer and better than ever before, but we can’t forget how to live without it. “Just because technology is there and makes something easier doesn’t mean we should rely on it so much that we can’t think for ourselves,” (Levinson).
Technology addiction is almost similar to drug addiction. Technology is useful in many ways. Using computer, internet, cellphone, television etc. make peoples’ life easier and comfortable. Young people are the most user of it. They cannot think of a single day without use technical device. Tara Parker-Pope is an author of books on health topics and a columnist for the New York Times. In her article , she expressed that, “The International Center for Media and the Public Agenda at the University of Maryland asked 200 students to refrain from using electronic media for a day.
