Teens today spend a total of 7 ½ hours a day on their phones and social networking, etc., according to a study that was conducted in 2010 by the Kaiser Family Foundation (Masuma Ahuja). In this day and age technology is everywhere and in some ways it’s good, but in other cases it could be bad because people can do negative things online and have consequences because with the technology that we have nowadays it keeps everything and if you post something on the internet it would be there forever. Technology can be good and bad, but the way you choose to use it would define you and you can be contributing positive or negative experiences to your community. People get bullied a lot online because sometimes people take nudes and send them to boyfriends/ girlfriends and if they have a bad breakup they want to get their revenge and they post these pictures so the whole world can see, and when classmates get wind of it they take it upon themselves to ridicule them (Suicide Prevention). When that happens people think that they can escape the ridicule, but people from all over the world can humiliate them online. For example, I saw this movie on Lifetime and she was under pressure to lose her virginity to her boyfriend and she was until she second guessed herself, so she felt bad that she goes all the way so she decided to take some nude pictures and she sent them to her boyfriend (Lifetime). By the next morning all her classmates had seen her pictures and on her locker it had mean words in it and it was covered in condoms, and people from other districts had seen the pictures (Lifetime). She documented in a video on how she was being called a whore and how everybody in her school thought that she was easy, she would then go on into saying that her pictures had gone online and how strangers were saying mean thoughts so she decided she wanted to kill herself (Lifetime). Back in the days when people didn’t have portable telephones or any telephones at all they would talk face-to-face, because that is how we would spend time together or communicate or that’s the only way we could communicate. But now I’m starting to see that even though our friends are in the same room they are texting each other than having some kind of interaction or they’re just text each other in their own homes because they think it’s easier to text than see each other in the eyes (Ahuja & RooGirl). And when that happens when we have to go for a job or star being in the real world they wouldn’t know how to function because they don’t have any experience whatsoever on dealing and interacting with human
Instead of communicating verbally, one tends to text. People have lost the skills on how to look each other in the eye and talk! Without a cellphone I am able to have face to face conversations. I am able to look someone in the eye without hesitation and speak. I’m also able to hear the sincerity in someone’s voice that I’m speaking to them or the anger in their tone. Through text messages a person’s tone is always misinterpreted. A message that may have been sent with no mal intentions can be interrupted by the reader as sarcastic or rude. People’s lives are influenced by the lack of communicating. For example, in Hamilton Spectator’s article Wired For the Future, the writer explains the negative effects caused by the lack of communicating by saying, “[i]f teens stop communicating with their friends and others face to face, they will lose the ability to navigate complex social situations and that could be devastating for them when they are faced with college and job interviews....” (Hamilton Spectator 2). In other words, that when people keep forgetting how to communicate by overly using messaging systems, it could lead to negative problems in their lives: interviews or meeting with delegates. Those are important to people’s lives, because when children are independent and working in their jobs, they have to socialize with others. Communicating is unavoidable in social life, because people still communicate even though texting and messaging are taking enormous space in our world. The reasons why technology is impacting society in a negative way is how people are forgetting how to socialize and becoming antisocial, automatics are taking the place of jobs for humans, and the internet is making millions addicted along with more mental health problems.

Many children are ridiculed and bullied via social media pages such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. They are publically shamed for various reasons some being considered not popular, promiscuous, or homosexual. They receive messages and are included in posts or tweets that target them for who they are. Others who see these posts can take part in commenting and ganging up on the individual. On ABC News most recently, teen girls have targeted others by posting “silly photos of themselves then altered to include blunt advice to each other, about things like how to dress more appropriately.” Today the person being targeted eventually commits suicide because the humiliation becomes unbearable. In Jean Twenge’s article, “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” he says, “More comfortable in their bedrooms than in a car or at a party, today’s teens are physically safer than teens have ever been. They’re markedly less likely to get into a car accident and, having less of a taste for alcohol than their predecessors, are less susceptible to drinking’s attendant ills.” While this does cause them to be safer, many of them don’t develop satisfactory communication skills considering most of them do not talking to others in person. They also do not learn how to use their body language to properly convey emotion. More evidence for phones not being too harmful comes from Lisa Guernsey’s article, “Don’t Take Away Your Teen’s Phone,” she says, “’I know how easy it is to find negativity and hurt on the internet,’ my daughter told me. But, she added, ‘it is also through the internet, on sites like Tumblr, where teens often find comfort and can engage in discussions of how they are feeling.” While this might paint social media usage in a warm light, people should think of all the pain that comes from usage of social media as well. Suicide is a very serious issue that happens to appear frequently. Kids figure that they have no one to go to and get help, so they choose this path instead. “Suicide is responsible for nearly 4,500 deaths of kids every year” (CyberBullyHotline). It is also ranked 3rd for what causes the most deaths in the U.S. About 20% of teens will have the thought of suicide but 1 in 10 usually attempt it” (CyberBullyHotline). As mentioned a little before about kids not having anyone to turn to, it is just a product of thinking. The kids get put down so much that they feel like there is just no possible way for them to be helped. But that isn’t necessarily true because they never get around to asking for help because in their mind it isn’t an option. And this all happens because people decide that it is okay to make someone else’s life miserable. Social media has an influence that can cause bad mental health.

Everyone has seen that kid with music blasting basting out of his purple ear-buds, girl texting on her phone, and the teen on their phone communicating with society. As a fellow teen, in my daily life, I use technology constantly. Either in school or outside of school. I feel teens rely on today’s technology to heavily that it may be having harmful affects on teens. The youth of today are constantly engaged in technological advancements. technology promote nonstop communication and instant gratification. whether through cell phones, gaming systems, laptops, or i pods. are these technological advancements a good thing? The growth of technology has negatively influenced the social interactions of today's youth because it isolates individuals from reality, hinders communication, and effects the teens learning ability.
Technology use was on the rise but has shown a significant increased rate in recent years. Technology was a beneficial tool that was used on a daily basis. Technology industries had developed many devices like computers, laptops, smartphones, iPods, and many other devices that made technology easier to access from anywhere and anytime. Technology expanded every day and the usage increased which had an effect on society especially targeting teens. I remember a classmate when I was in high school because he never talked to anybody. He spent most of his time on his cell phone or using his tablet, and he did not do well in school. He was different than my other classmates and I believe that he never felt comfortable in the classroom. Everybody knows that cell phones have changed peoples’ life dramatically. Cell phones are one of the most revolutionary advances in the last decades because they make things simpler and easier but cell phones have a strong impact on teenagers. Teenagers are in one of the most important phase in their lives because they are exploring the world and developing their capacities. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not yet realized how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology.
