“Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is most important” (Grates). Teachers model the use of many aspects of technology on a daily basis from computer software to email to digital resources used for teaching and learning. The definition of technology I most agree with is the practical application of knowledge, especially in a particular area. I particularly like this definition of technology because it touches on the fact that technology does not only have to be computers or phones. However, technology is knowledge, a tool, or a resource that students are required to use to succeed in school.
Since, technology is such an important tool for pupils’ education teachers must be able to model and teach appropriate use of the Internet and cell phones in the classroom. For this to happen, it is important that all schools have a protocol and rules about the use of technology. This is where digital citizenship becomes an important concept for all school to understand. Digital citizenship requires that students and teachers understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior in the use of it. It is highly important that students have and know the standards they must follow to have the privilege to use the internet. The internet becomes a valuable tool for students to have. For example to look for information for a research project on any particular subject. For instance, in my school experience since the 1st-grade when we were allowed to use the computers we as students were given a contract to sign stating the rules to be allowed to use the internet. In conclusion, I believe that even though not all schools have the same resources available due to the limited social, economic levels of each district, all teachers should incorporate the use of technology in any form. Because it will prepare students for the future, a future where technology is becoming the primary means of living life. Technology does not have to be electronics technology can be math manipulates or anything that can help a student have a resource available to them as an aid in something they struggle with understanding. Technology should only be used as a shortcut if the student has the information behind the data. Technology should never be the primary means of a student’s information; a teacher should always be the primary information provider.
