Technology can be two fold; it can be a blessing and a curse. It has forever impacted and changed social interaction. We live in a day where it is hard to get away from the screen, either the phone or computer and any other electronic devices, not only for work but also for leisure. We are forgetting how to reconnect, recharge, and relax. Thus, it has been requested we should, for one day, unplug ourselves from technology. Will this be beneficial? The idea of a technology Sabbath is beneficial in three ways: in recharging and relaxing, in deepening friendship, and attending and listening to people’s messages better.
Though technology has increased productivity and how quickly a person can receive messages, it hasn’t helped in actually relaxing. In fact, as stated by Tony Schwatz, “When we’re under pressure, however, most of us experience the opposite impulse: to push harder rather than rest.” (Schwatz, 2013, p. 1) This in turn affects productivity. Studies have shown the number one cause of loss productivity was not getting enough sleep (Klosowski, 2013, p. 1). Thus, taking a well needed break from it all will rejuvenate and recharge our minds which have been on the fast track zone for most of the week.
I am one of those people who work all day without a break on the computer. Though I try to relax with watching television and listening to music, it only makes me more motivated to write, finish creative tasks, and work more with technology, which then leads to more exhaustion. Thus, taking a break from the blue screen will help me recharge my brain and be able to spend time relaxing with family when I would otherwise be engaged with technology.
Correspondently, if taking a break from technology can aid in recharging, ...

... listen mindlessly, which in turn gives the wrong nonverbal cues that what I am doing is more important than the person who is talking. Getting unplugged from those devices that would lead to distraction will benefit me so I can give full attention to the person who is speaking. This will then, as stated previously will aid in deepening my relational communication to them.
In summary, we have seen the benefits of taking a technology break. It helps us with relaxation and recharging, in deepening relationships, and lastly listening and attending better. We also must understand that technology is not the problem for our distracted busy lives. It was designed to help us be able to communicate and be more productive. The problem lies when we do understand when to take a break to recharge and relax. Like everything else in life, technology must be used in moderation.

Cyberspace: A Blessing or a Curse? Essay

- Cyberspace: Home, Sweet Home. There is no denying the ambivalence that surrounds modern technology. In a world where apathy is uncommon, people could debate for days about whether technology is a blessing or a curse. But their deliberations are futile. Even if they came to a consensus, would it matter. Humans will never stop using technology, even if it is discovered that it is detracting greatly from their lives; they are willing to accept both the negative and positive consequences that come along with using it....   [tags: technology, screens, time]
