Over the last several years I feel there has been a huge shift in the way people around the world are taught and the way people learn in the classroom on a day-to-day basis. In my opinion this is not a result of change to a single element involving teaching techniques, but more specifically a change in amount (increase) of technology used by teachers and students alike. Technology provides many major benefits to society, proven by its dramatic advancement over the last 30 years, but it also presents the question- If we are choosing to make our lives easier by using technology, which in essence is what it is made for, are we really learning/ comprehending as much as we once did?
Technology is changing quickly and dramatically. Not only in the amount we use technology, but also in the way we use technology. In today’s day and age information is easily accessible due to increases in devices that connect you to information and even to others. We now have tablets that work as notepads, cell phones that work as computers and computers that work as telephones, all of which can or will have a place in the classrooms of tomorrow. For the first time in history we are now a finger click away from having a virtually limitless amount of information on topics a random as the Internet itself. As a result of this, students do not need read as much material or to the extent, that was once required. Reading was, is, and will always be a skill that people need to survive in modern society, but with the decrease in the amount of reading required for academic success due to research accessibility student reading comprehension must be affected. Just spending some time in the modern-day classroom; I have observed several students on their phones. During my high school years we did not have to worry about cell phones or laptops being a constant problem. In Annie Murphy Paul’s “You’ll Never Learn!” she explains the studies of multitasking while students do their homework with the modern-day distraction of the digital age; resulting in a lower quality of learning. I agree with Paul that the digital age is becoming a problem in education, even though educators are leaning towards teaching on a digital spectrum. In this essay, I will explain how a digital age versus a non-digital age is effecting everyone involved in a higher education.
Therefore, the way in which a student’s view of the world will change must be taken into consideration when implementing technology into a curriculum. Source B specifically addresses that a student’s view of the world will change with technology when it says “educators are beginning to interact with students, parents, and each other in ways they have never before.” While remaining neutral concerning whether or not the implementation of technology is beneficial or not, Source B agrees that the internet undeniably changes the perspective people have on reality, especially since technology changes the way people interact with each other not only online, but in person as well. “There are almost 180 million cell phone users and it is rapidly expanding” (Betancourt). Nearly every student in the United States owns a cell phone. Cell phones have been around for forty years. The first cell phone was placed by Martin Cooper in 1973. Cell phones become increasingly popular as the twenty-first century technology becomes more advance. People in younger generation rely on cell phone to accomplish basic needs. Some even becomes addictive to the cell phone. For example, I have a cousin who considers cell phone as an important part of her daily life. If I ask her to put away her cell phone, she would complain “I can’t live without my cell phone.” Cell phone should be prevented from using excessively because if cell phone is used in an improper way, it would ultimately becomes a distraction device for students. Therefore, students would be lack in interpersonal relationship, distracted during class, which can lead to academic failure, and distracted while driving, which can lead to serious accident and death. The negative impacts of cell phone on students are significant matters that need to be addressed.

Technology is becoming more and more dominant in our society.Everyday upgrades are being made and new innovations are being discovered. Technology is all around us whether we want it to be or not: it is the vehicles we drive, it can be found in our homes, and can even be found in the grocery store.Every place we look there is some type of technology.I believe technology has had a major impact on our school systems and is still impacting it today.There are those who do not agree, though, that technology has impacted our schools.Eric Gormly writes, “In fact, many theorists point out the overall impact of technology on education has been quite small, manifesting little discernible change in the classroom.” [1]Yes, there are some schools that are not as advanced as others, but many of them do have a significant amount of technology in them.I find it fascinating that so much technology has been incorporated into our classrooms, but I believe that, even with all of the positive aspects that are associated with technology, there are some negative and even dangerous aspects that should be taken into account.I will be sharing some of the equipment that has been used in the schools, how both the students and the teachers use the equipment, and also the positive and negative effects that technology has had on our schools.
It is rather astonishing to me how in all the conversations and debates about the decline of education in the United States we have ignored the most fundamental of its causes. Our students have changed radically. Today’s students are no longer the children our educational system was designed to teach. Students today have not just changed drastically from those of the past. This change goes beyond the different clothes, styles, and slang being used today youngsters. I see that a really big discontinuity has taken place. One might even call it a “singularity” – an event that changes things so fundamentally that there is absolutely no going back. This so-called “singularity” is the arrival and the popularity of digital technology in the last decade or so.
Cell phones may be the top of devices those distract students in class. The ubiquitous problem originates from the cell phones. I’m also a high school student, I can see some of my classmates use it for texting every day in class instead of listening to the teacher. Students also use it for playing video games, listening to music, watching videos. And definitely, while you are playing with your phones, you will not be able to absorb the lesson that the teacher is trying to teach. It’s not easy to do two things at the same time, except you are super. Have you ever tried to draw a circle by your left hand and draw a rectangle by the other hand simultaneously? When you do two things or more at the same time, your brain will just focus on one thing and naturally ignore the other. As Peter Bregman wrote in the Harvard Business Review Blog Network that multitasking can reduce productivity by as much as 40%, increase stress and cause a 10-point fall in IQ.
Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
Technology has allowed students, teachers, and parents to access unlimited resources instantly. The ease of access to school services and materials helps students in many ways. Redd makes a good point stating that “Many of these mobile devices are characterized as miniature classroom computers that allow students to partake in the ‘anytime, anywhere’ learning movement” (30). Students today use all types of electronic devices to do the unimaginable. The internet is a portal for students to connect to everything around the world giving them instantaneous access to resources. Imagine going throughout a day without the aid of technology, it detracts the learning process and limits accessibility. Students find it easier to access coursework, “Some said they were reluctant to use mobile phone functions such as SMS texting and information downloads for course-related activities” (Moule 61). Throughout history technology has been the driving force of change. From movable type, to television, to the Internet, technology has been embraced and incorporated into our daily lives. Within the constructs of civilized society, the vast rewards of technological innovations have far outweighed the negatives. The digital revolution has altered conceptions of time and distance. It has created a wealth of information that is available at the stroke of a key. Not since the invention of the printing press has the distribution and consumption of information been so democratized. The rapidly changing technological landscape has put students and teachers in the cross-hairs. Can students be positively impacted by this digital revolution? The education world has been greatly influenced by rapidly changing technology and the increasing availability of information. Schools have advanced by leaps and bounds when it comes to incorporating technology into the learning environment, however, many more advances need to be made. In all areas of the country, educators are trying to help students keep up with technology, but there are more changes that are essential for preparing the next generation for the future.
Modern technology has made it so much easier to obtain educational information for classroom or homework assignments.
